Hayes was the 19th U.S. President serving from 1877-1881. He was also a Ohio governor, a U.S. Congressman and a General in the Civil War and loving husband to Lucy and father to eight children.
Honoring the memory of Rutherford B. Hayes, his family established the first presidential library open to the public in 1916. For 100 years the collections have grown beyond the core collection to include 90,000 books, manuscripts and images which reflect Hayes' special interests, including genealogy, local history, and the Gilded Age period in which he lived.
Spiegel Grove houses the Hayes Museum and 31 room mansion, along with 25 acres of park and the burial site of President and Mrs. Hayes.

On Saturday, July 4, which is also America’s 250th birthday (semiquincentennial), the USS Spiegel Grove bell will be unveiled in its new display with two new plaques, an interpretive panel and related artifacts in the lower level of the museum. The ceremony is at 12:30 p.m., and the public is invited to attend. Admission to the ceremony is free.

Seventeen creative squirrel doors are hidden on trees throughout Spiegel Grove and are ready for visitors to find through Labor Day, which is Monday, Sept. 7.
Through this free program, visitors can either download a squirrel doors map here, or pick one up in the museum lobby at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.

A walking tour of trees named after people at Spiegel Grove and exhibits on local history are the focus of projects created by the Teen Museum Council at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.
Two exhibits will be on display during an open house on Wednesday, June 24, and the walking tour brochure will be available for visitors to take the self-guided walk. An area showing plaques no longer hanging on trees that have been removed also will be on display.
The open house is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the museum. Admission is free during this event.

A Norwalk woman recently donated 1,500 books related to the Civil War to the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, a major gift that expands the library’s collection on a topic directly related to President Rutherford B. Hayes.
The books belonged to William J. Pierce, a Civil War book collector who amassed them over many years. His widow, Marilyn Pierce, donated the library of volumes – ranging from titles focused on different battles to Civil War photography.
