August and September Happenings at Hayes Presidential
From craft beer to Tree Tours to History Roundtable, August and September are packed with an array of events at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.
Tree Tour of Spiegel Grove: Gates and Trees - Saturday, Aug. 15
This tour departs the museum at 10 a.m. Explore the trees at Spiegel Grove. Visit the White House gates at the entrances to Spiegel Grove, and learn some of the stories about them. Tickets for non-members are $10 for adults, $7 for ages 6-18, free for ages 5 and younger. Hayes Presidential members can enjoy this tour for free. Click here for details.
Last Verandah Concert of the season features North Coast Big Band - Wednesday, Aug. 19
Bring a lawn chair or blanket and relax to the toe-tapping tunes of the World War II era played by the North Coast Big Band. Old-fashioned ice cream social is at 6:30 p.m.; concert begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Click here for details.
Craft Beers, Cocktails & Corks at Spiegel Grove - Saturday, Aug. 22
Enjoy beer, wine and cocktails while listening to live music and munching on food truck fare on the beautiful and historic grounds of Spiegel Grove during the eighth annual Craft Beers Cocktails and Corks on Saturday, Aug. 22.
The event is from 4 to 8 p.m. on the grounds of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. The VIP ticketed experience returns for its third year and will begin at 3 p.m.
Craft Beers, Cocktails & Corks ticket holders can enjoy beer and wine samples, as well as a cocktail, food truck fare, live music by vocal heavy acoustic band All Strung Out and raffles. Cocktail choices are a rye Manhattan or a watermelon mojito.
There will also be a cigar tent where cigars will be offered for sale. Smoking will be in that designated area only and will be limited to cigars.
VIP ticket holders get all those benefits plus a VIP-only seating area on the verandah hors d’oeuvres, three drinks not included in the main event and a commemorative pint glass. The VIP area will be open to VIP ticket holders throughout the evening.
America 250 handmade quilt raffle - Tickets on sale through Craft Beers, Cocktails & Corks event Aug. 22
A cozy, one-of-a-kind handmade quilt with an America 250 and President Rutherford B. Hayes theme could be your new favorite blanket.
The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is selling raffle tickets for this beautiful quilt, created by Brenda Havens and long-armed stitched by JoEllen Kaiser from now through the Aug. 22. The quilt is 73 inches by 64 inches.
Raffle tickets are $10 and available at the museum front desk or online below.
Proceeds from the raffle benefit Hayes Presidential, a non-profit organization.
Hayes Presidential expresses huge thanks to Havens and Kaiser, who has a quilt shop in Lindsey. They donated their time and talents to create this beautiful work of Americana art.
The winner of the raffle will be drawn during Craft Beers, Cocktails & Corks on Saturday, Aug. 22. The winner does not need to be present to win. They will be notified, and the quilt can be shipped to them.
Last First Lady Lucy Hayes' Birthday Celebration - Saturday, Aug 29
Join the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in celebrating First Lady Lucy Hayes’ birthday with complimentary lemon cookies and lemonade, free craft activities and an outdoor butterfly scavenger hunt from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 29. Lucy Hayes, the 19th first lady of the United States, would have turned 195 on Friday, Aug. 28. Each year, Hayes marks her birthday with events with free activities for the public to enjoy. Tree Symposium - Friday, Sept. 4
Learn how to identify and control invasive plant and insect species, care for young trees and more at the third annual Tree Symposium on Friday, Sept. 4, at Spiegel Grove, an arboretum and presidential site.
The event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with check-in beginning at 8 a.m. in the auditorium of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, located at Spiegel Grove. The registration fees are $40 per person for non-members, $35 per person fo
r Hayes Presidential members and $22 for students. Lunch is included.
History Roundtable - Saturdays, Sept. 5, 12, 19, 26 and Oct. 10 and 17
From the signers of the Declaration of Independence to under-told stories of men and women behind the American Revolution to the downfall of Alexander Hamilton, History Roundtable will have a colonial American focus this fall.
The popular series, led by retired educator Mike Gilbert, returns for its 13th season and will focus on topics highlighting early American History in celebration of the United States’ semiquincentennial celebration this year. Gilbert researches each topic and presents fascinating stories of the past.
History Roundtable will take place in person. Pre-recorded virtual sessions also will be offered for those who cannot attend in person.
Six sessions are offered on Saturdays in September and October. Sessions are from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Admission – whether in person or virtually through the recordings – is $5 per session or $25 for all six. Pre-registration and pre-payment for both in-person and virtual sessions are required.
