Teen Museum Council members to have open house June 24 for exhibits, walking tour

A walking tour of trees named after people at Spiegel Grove and exhibits on local history are the focus of projects created by the Teen Museum Council at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.

Two exhibits will be on display during an open house on Wednesday, June 24, and the walking tour brochure will be available for visitors to take the self-guided walk. An area showing plaques no longer hanging on trees that have been removed also will be on display.

The open house is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the museum. Admission is free during this event.

Afterward, visitors are invited to stay for the ice cream social and Verandah Concert featuring All Strung Out, a heavy vocal acoustic band.

The exhibits focus on the 72nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a unit of Civil War soldiers mustered from Sandusky County and Gen. Ralph Buckland, who led the regiment, and Fanny Hayes, the only daughter of President Rutherford B. Hayes and First Lady Lucy Hayes.

Teen Museum Council members worked with Hayes Presidential staff to identify artifacts, manuscripts and photos that would be relevant to the topics and on set up and organization of these exhibits and walking tour.

The exhibits will then remain on display throughout the summer, and the walking tour brochure also will be available. Access to the exhibits will be included with regular museum admission, and Hayes Presidential members are admitted for free. The walking tour is free.

Teen Museum Council members are students at area high schools who meet monthly at Hayes Presidential to learn about the museum field and various jobs within it, from working in archives and curatorial positions to business and finance to administration to building and grounds management to marketing and design. The program is in its third year.
