Learn to identify and control invasive species, more at annual tree symposium
Learn how to identify and control invasive plant and insect species, care for young trees and more at the third annual Tree Symposium on Friday, Sept. 4, at Spiegel Grove, an arboretum and presidential site.
The event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with check-in beginning at 8 a.m. in the auditorium of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, located at Spiegel Grove.
The registration fees are $40 per person for non-members, $35 per person for Hayes Presidential members and $22 for students. Lunch is included.
New this year, participants can receive continuing education credits for attending the symposium through the Ohio Chapter of the International Society of Arborculture. The schedule of sessions is:
- 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. – Check-in, coffee and donuts
- 9 to 9:15 a.m. – Welcome by Christie Weininger, Hayes Presidential Library & Museums executive director.
- 9:15 to 10 a.m. – Invasive Plants in Northwest Ohio, presented by Amy Stone, Ohio State University Extension, retired
- 10 to 10:45 a.m. – Habitat in Every Layer: How urban forests support wildlife, presented by Deb Nofzinger, certified interpretive guide, Sandusky County Park District
- 11 a.m. to noon – Tree Tour of Spiegel Grove by Havens.
- Noon to 1 p.m. – Lunch
- 1 to 1:45 p.m. – Invasive species you need to know - Spotted Lanternfly and Box Tree Moth. This talk will cover life cycles, host plants, scouting, trapping and controls of both species, presented by Thomas Dehaas, OSU Extension, Erie County
- 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. – Young Tree Care, presented by Stephanie Miller and Maggie Rundio, regional urban forester Northwest Ohio.
- 2:30 p.m. - Conclusion by John Havens
The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is America’s first presidential Hayes Presidential is a Level 2 arboretum accredited by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and The Morton Arboretum for achieving particular standards of professional practices deemed important for arboreta and botanic gardens. Level 2 arboreta have 100 and more species of trees.
The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program is the only global initiative to officially recognize arboreta at various levels of development, capacity and professionalism.
Hayes Presidential is also recognized as an accredited arboretum in the Morton Register of Arboreta, a database of the world’s arboreta and gardens dedicated to woody plants.
Hayes Presidential is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner of the federal presidential library system. It is partially funded by the state of Ohio and affiliated with the Ohio History Connection. Hayes Presidential is located at Spiegel Grove on Buckland Avenue.
