Event Description
The 2027 First Ladies Symposium will bring to Spiegel Grove historians of the First Ladies for a day of scholarship, collections exhibition, cooking programming, house tours and public discussion. Headlined by the authors of “The Cambridge Companion to U.S. First Ladies” (Cambridge University Press, 2025) the symposium will feature a moderated group of panelists who will provide a chronological discussion of the many women who have occupied the position during the 251 year-history of the United States, and also examine the roles, accomplishments, triumphs and tragedies and legacies of the first ladies from Martha Washington to Melania Trump, including the many women who served as White House hostesses. Hayes Presidential Historian Joshua Dubbert will present on Lucy Hayes, and other visiting experts from presidential sites around Ohio will offer additional interpretation and context on the subject.
