Member Perk: Virtual Program – “Lucy Webb Hayes, The ‘First’ First Lady”
Category: Events
Date & Time: Thursday, July 9, 2026. 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Event Description
This program is presented by Hayes Presidential Library & Museums Historian Josh Dubbert. Lucy Ware Webb Hayes lived just 57 years, but it was a life full of learning, hardship, tragedy, love, adventure and remarkable achievement. Her lifetime roughly spanned the Victorian Era (1837-1901) — a time of immense change and Civil War.
Yet through all of her personal and public trials, Lucy maintained her bearing, poise and geniality, serving as her husband’s confidant in war and politics, as a nurse to Union soldiers, as mother of an ever-growing family, as First Lady of the United States and as contributor to a number of causes including temperance, veteran affairs, children’s welfare, poor relief and education for African Americans. Hers is a story of public duty and family devotion, lived during one of the most harrowing and contentious periods in American history.
This program is for Hayes Presidential members only. To register, contact Membership Coordinator Meghan Wonderly-Kolbe at 419-332-2081 or [email protected]. Member perks are sponsored by KF Construction & Excavating, LLC.
