A military band performing while on horseback is the newest addition to the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums’ annual Civil War Winter Camp taking place Saturday, Oct. 25, at Spiegel Grove.
The 2nd Cavalry Band playing twice during Civil War Winter Camp is one of many activities included in the day-long camp event.
Civil War Winter Camp is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It focuses on life in a winter camp like those of President Rutherford B. Hayes’ regiment, the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and takes participants inside the camp to see aspects of how soldiers lived during the war.
The day includes rifle demonstrations, talks, a kids’ event, reenactors portraying Civil War veterans and more. Roots Poultry’s food truck and Maumee Valley Heritage Corridor’s root beer stand will sell lunch and snacks. Refreshments are not included with admission.

The schedule of events is as follows:
- 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. — Tours of the winter camp take place every half hour. Camp tours last about 50 minutes. Paid tickets are required and are available below. Members will need to log in to receive their discount. Tickets will also be available at the museum front desk the day of the event, pending availability. Tickets for non-members are $10 ages 13 and older, $7 ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and younger. Tickets for Hayes Presidential Library & Museums members are $8 for ages 13 and older, $5 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and younger.
- 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. — Model-T rides by Firelands Timeless Ts. These are offered because Civil War veterans would have driven Model-Ts to their reunions.
- 11 a.m. — Demonstration and talk by the 5thS. Colored Troops at the lecture tent. Free.
- 11 a.m. — Kids’ activities begin in the museum auditorium. Free.
- 11:30 a.m. — 2nd Cavalry Brigade Brass Band performs on horseback on the side of the Hayes Home. Free.
- 12:30 p.m. — Marching and rifle firing demonstration in the Rose Garden area. Free.
- 1 p.m. — 73rd Regimental Band performs on the Hayes Home verandah. Free.
- 2 p.m. — Phil Spaugy ,Phil Spaugy, Military Images Magazine senior editor, talks about Ohio soldiers and the weapons they used. Free.
- 3 p.m. — Demonstration and talk by the 5thS. Colored Troops at the lecture tent. Free.
- 4 p.m. — 2nd Cavalry Brigade Brass Band performs on horseback on the side of the Hayes Home. Free.
- 4:30 p.m. — Marching and rifle firing demonstration in the Rose Garden area. Free.
5:30 p.m. — Membership Perk for Hayes Presidential Library & Museums members only — Members will tour the camp, learn about Civil War weapons, camp life and have a question-and-answer session with reenactors. Tours of the Hayes Home and museum are not included with the Civil War Winter Camp tickets. However, Hayes Presidential is offering a 20-percent discount on site passes that include admission to the home and museum throughout the day on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Hayes Presidential is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner of the federal presidential library system. It is partially funded by the state of Ohio and affiliated with the Ohio History Connection. Hayes Presidential is located at Spiegel Grove on Buckland Avenue.
