Check out our new unit focused on Rutherford B. Hayes and his evolving views on anti-slavery as he transformed from an anti-abolitionist to a defender of freedom seekers. The unit as a whole was a created in collaboration with the Curatorial and Education Department of Hayes Presidential and explores essential themes in US History leading up to the Civil War, such as abolition, sectionalism, and civil rights in the US. These 4 lessons are self-guided with an option to be facilitated by a Hayes Staff Member. Primary source analysis is the foundation for all 4 lessons with suggested tools and strategies for differentiated instruction included. This analysis serves as a lens to examine wider historical themes while also presenting a unique window into the lives of people at this time, engaging students in a conversation with those in the past and enabling further conversation in the present. For various ages, geared towards Grades 9-12.
