Lesson Plan: 19th Century Campaigns

In this lesson plan, students will analyze primary sources from the 1876 campaign before creating their own 3-ponint platform and campaign artifact. Lesson plan created by HPLM staff.

Activity: Electoral Map Analysis 

In this activity, students will analyze a map showing the results of the 1876 election to better understand how the electoral college works. Educational activity created by HPLM staff.

 Activity: True Story? The Election of 1876

Students will analyze two partisan newspaper articles from 1876 reacting to the election results (one Republican and one Democrat paper). After reading through the articles, students will examine the factual timeline of events from the election. Students will use this timeline to identify errors and biases present in both papers and evaluate their overall credibility. Educational activity created by HPLM staff.
