Introduction
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums in Fremont, Ohio is the nation’s first presidential library and museum. The properties consist of the house Hayes and his descendants lived in from the 1870s until 1965, the museum and library building, the tomb of President and Mrs. Hayes, and the grounds of Spiegel Grove surrounding these sites. 

Site History
The Hayes Memorial Library and Museum was dedicated to the memory of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States, and his wife Lucy Webb Hayes in 1916. The building was enlarged in 1922 and 1969 and contains the papers, books, as well as artifacts from his various careers and interests.

In 1859 Sardis Birchard, uncle of Rutherford B. Hayes began construction of a house he hoped would become the permanent residence of his nephew and family. The house was built on property he called Spiegel Grove. Spiegel, the German word for mirror, referred to the small standing pools of water following a rain. Rutherford and Lucy moved to Fremont in 1873 and, except for time as governor of Ohio and president, lived there until their deaths. Son Colonel Webb C. Hayes; Admiral Webb C. Hayes II and Webb Hayes III continued to reside in this house until it was deeded to the state of Ohio in 1965.

Spiegel Grove itself is a site of historic interest. The Harrison Trail, a pathway used to move supplies from one outpost to another during the War of 1812, runs through the property. The Grove includes numerous trees named for well-known friends of the Hayes family who visited them in Fremont. And, in 1927, due to traffic concerns, the White House removed large metal gates that had been in place during Hayes’ administration. Through the efforts of Colonel Webb C. Hayes these gates were brought to Fremont and installed at the entrances to Spiegel Grove.

Upon their deaths, President and Mrs. Hayes were buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Fremont. In 1915 the family erected a new tomb on a favorite knoll in Spiegel Grove. Their bodies were moved to the present site a short distance from the Hayes home.

The name of the Hayes Memorial Library and Museum was changed to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in 1983. In 2016, the name was again officially changed to Rutherford B. Hayes Library and Museums. 

Scope and Content
This collection contains 1,176 photographs of Spiegel Grove in Fremont, Ohio including the home of Rutherford B. Hayes, the library and museum honoring Hayes, the 25 acres of grounds surrounding the home and museum, and special events that took place at this site. The collection spans the years from 1873 to 1989. Many of the photographs were taken by the Hayes Presidential Center’s professional photographs and members of the Hayes family. Others were donated by individuals, and, still others were commissioned for publicity purposes.

A large number of photographs show exterior views of the Hayes residence in different seasons at various time periods from 1873 to 1989. Interior photographs of some of the rooms of the house that show the changing furnishings and decorations over the years are also found here.

A second area of concentration is photography of the library and museum constructed in 1916 and expanded in 1922 and again in 1969. These photos are of the exterior as well as the interior and show some of the past museum exhibits and displays.

A third focus of the collection is the grounds surrounding the Hayes home and library. These photographs show the tomb of President and Mrs. Hayes, the gates that had been at the White House during Hayes’ administration, carriage house, greenhouse, and the many trees, some of which were named and dedicated to well-known friends and colleagues of the Hayes family. Photos of the Harrison Trail from the early 1800s and other footpaths are also included.

Another portion of the collection consists of the wide variety of social functions that have taken place at Spiegel Grove. These include receptions for community organizations, special events, and Hayes family members and staff activities.
