Introduction
Lucy Hayes Cook McCandless was a cousin of Lucy Webb Hayes and a granddaughter of Edward Tiffin, governor of Ohio. The collection contains family correspondence. An item level inventory is available at the Hayes Presidential Center. A portion of the photographs have been transferred.

Biographical Sketch
Lucy Hayes Cook was born at Willow Branch in Union Twp., Ross County, Ohio in 1851. She was one of the nine children of Matthew Scott Cook and Eleanor Worthington Tiffin. She was the granddaughter of Edward Tiffin, governor of Ohio. Matthew was a younger brother to Lucy Webb Hayes's mother, Maria Cook Webb. Matthew Scott ("Scott") was a farmer, banker, surveyor, and Ohio Congressman. In 1888, Lucy married Edward Violett McCandless. They resided in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and were the parents of two sons: Scott Cook and David. Lucy died at Pittsburgh in 1902.

Scope and Content
The collection consists primarily of family correspondence between Lucy McCandless and Cook relatives, including Rutherford B. and Lucy Webb Hayes. The correspondence dates from 1880 to 1893. Also included are clippings, a journal pertaining to Lucy's 1888 wedding plans (accounts, guest lists, etc.), family photographs, including a large album with images of the McCandless Bayard Street home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, accounts (1902-1903), and letters of administration (1903).
