Biographical Sketch
Elizabeth Mitchell Heyl was the eldest child of General John Grant Mitchell and Laura Platt Mitchell, the niece of President Rutherford B. Hayes. Born deaf and mute in 1864, Elizabeth was taken to the Clarke School in Northampton, Massachusetts before the age of five. At Clarke, she learned to speak and read lips. Returning to Columbus, Ohio, Elizabeth, known to the family as Lily, married James Henry Heyl in 1892 at Columbus, Ohio. They were the parents of four children. James Henry (Harry), Fanny, John Mitchell, and Edward Barry (Ed), were born in Columbus. John Mitchell died in infancy. There were no grandchildren. Elizabeth died in North Hollywood, California in 1956 where two of her children lived.

Scope and Content
The collection consists mainly of family correspondence, beginning in 1856 and extending to 1949. The correspondence includes that of Elizabeth Mitchell Heyl's parents, Laura Platt and John Grant Mitchell; grandparents, William A. and Fanny Hayes Platt; children, and extended family. The collection provides accounts of the death of President Hayes' sister, Fanny Hayes Platt in 1856. Of particular interest is the photograph collection that includes a large number of identified images of the Hayes, Platt, and Mitchell families.
