This collection, containing items regarding Rutherford P. Hayes (1928-2004) and his family, was donated to the Hayes Presidential Center by Scott Taylor Hayes in 2008
Biographical Sketch
Rutherford P. Hayes was born in Clearwater, Florida in 1928, the second child and first son of William Platt Hayes and Sarah Taylor Rogers. (William Platt Hayes was a son of Rutherford Platt Hayes and grandson of President Rutherford B. Hayes making Rutherford P. Hayes a great-grandson of President Hayes.) He attended Swarthmore College and the University of Wisconsin and then served three years in the U.S. Army in Germany.
Rutherford P. Hayes worked for the Udylite Co. in Detroit, Michigan and Occidental Petroleum in New Jersey. He married Inge Christeen Haas June 24, 1950 and they were the parents of two sons: Scott Taylor Hayes, born June 19, 1952; and Rutherford Platt Hayes, born June 29, 1955. Inge died in 1989 and Rutherford moved near Galveston, Texas where he met and married Verna Kemp. Rutherford P. Hayes died Aug. 17, 2004 in Texas and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Fremont, Ohio
Scott Taylor Hayes graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1974. He married Katherine Leah Schobloher June 2, 1979 and they are the parents of two children: Jaime Taylor Hayes, born Nov. 18, 1984; and Kellie Christeen Hayes, born June 7, 1994.
Scope and Content
This collection , dating from 1882 to 2004, focuses on the life and family of Rutherford P. Hayes (1928-2004). It includes his school records, military records, and some items from his work at Udylite Co. There are also high school yearbooks of Rutherford’s wife, Inge Christeen Haas. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs and slides from the families of Rutherford and his son, Scott Taylor Hayes. These photos and slides depict family vacations, holidays, and the construction of Scott’s home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
