Introduction
Scott Russell Hayes was the youngest son of Birchard Austin Hayes and Mary Sherman Hayes and a grandson of President Rutherford B. Hayes and Lucy Webb Hayes. He lived most of his life in Los Angeles, California working in the insurance industry.
Biographical Sketch
Scott Russell Hayes was born September 23, 1894 in Toledo, Ohio, the youngest child of Birchard Austin Hayes and Mary Sherman Hayes. He attended Princeton University but left in April 1917 to enlist in the U.S. Army Field Artillery.
After World War I he was engaged in oil prospecting in South America and eventually moved to Los Angeles, California where he worked as an insurance agent. There he married Muriel Gantz October 20, 1934 and they were the parents of three daughters: Nancy Sherman Hayes, Martha Jean Hayes, and Margaret Frances Hayes.
Scott Russell Hayes died in California November 18, 1968 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery at Fremont, Ohio.
Scope and Content
This collection contains 1942 correspondence of Scott Russell Hayes detailing difficulties he was experiencing as leader of a unit of Military police during World War II.
