Rutherford B. Hayes Speeches and Messages, 1841 – 1892
HAYES-1
Scope and Content
This collection, a part of the Rutherford B. Hayes Papers, includes all known notes, drafts, messages, and speeches of President Rutherford B. Hayes. The materials are arranged chronologically, beginning with an 1841 speech given by Hayes while attending Kenyon College and concluding with a speech about Manual Training given December 27, 1892, before the Ohio College Association in Columbus, Ohio.
In some cases, no speech, draft, or notes survived; only the event, date, and location are known. Whenever possible, a contemporary printing or report of the speech or message, frequently in the form of a newspaper clipping, is included. Official communications often include supporting material written by members of various executive departments.
The bulk of the notes and drafts in the collection are concentrated in the post-presidential years. Here can be found notes for addresses on education, especially manual training and prison reform. Additionally, numerous sets of notes exist for speeches given at Civil War veterans’ meetings, reunions, memorial celebrations, and dedications. A small number of speeches for the Woman’s Home Missionary Society, delivered by Lucy Webb Hayes but written by Rutherford B. Hayes, complete the collection. Undated fragments are filed at the end of the collection and are arranged by subject: for example, Civil War, Labor, Education, etc.
