Introduction
Donations to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums of Sandusky County, Ohio, military records, letters, and printed materials have been added to this collection over the decades. They were donated by Sandusky County, Ohio citizens, public officials, churches, Ohio War History Commission, newspapers, and local public service organizations.
Agency History
Shortly after the close of the Civil War, Sandusky County, Ohio residents formed a military history committee whose responsibility was to collect statistics, records, diaries, letters, and publications primarily related to Sandusky County’s participation in the Civil War. Eventually, the collection became a repository for varying Sandusky County military records.
Scope and Content
The collection includes publications, biographical sketches, newspaper clippings, reports, war loan materials, letters, newsletters, militia enrollments, advertising materials, WWII Ohio War History Commission holdings, GAR records, and lists of the names of servicemen and their units. The materials date from 1848 to 1975, however, the bulk of the collection contains materials from the Civil War and World War II. Almost no records exist for the Korean War, Vietnam, and subsequent U. S. conflicts. The collections contain no single set of complete records. Below is a folder-level listing of the materials in this collection.
