Introduction
The collection of catalogs and advertising material was originally part of the Rice Family Collection.
Biographical Sketch
The Rice family was one of Fremont, Ohio’s most prominent families from the 1840s to the 1960s. Dr. Robert S. Rice, the progenitor of the family, was born in Ohio County, Virginia, one of the seven children of Jacob and Nancy Stewart Rice on May 28, 1805. He came to Ohio with his parents at age ten, and eventually moved to Lower Sandusky (later known as Fremont) in 1827. Robert S. Rice started his career in Lower Sandusky as a potter and was active in the local militia, rising from captain to brigadier general in the 17th Division of the Ohio Militia. In 1835 he played a role in the Ohio-Michigan boundary dispute. Later Robert S. engaged in the study of medicine during his leisure hours and in 1847 launched his practice notwithstanding his lack of any formal medical training. This profession would occupy him for the remainder of his life. He died in August 1875.
Robert S. Rice married Eliza Caldwell in Marion on December 24, 1824. The couple had nine children. Two sons died in infancy and two daughters, Sarah Jane (1835-1841) and Emaline (1847-1859) lived relatively short lives. Five sons, William A. (1829-1893), John B. (1832-1893), Robert H. (1837-1906), Alfred H. (1840-1913), and Charles F. (1843-1909) survived their parents.
William became a dry goods merchant in Fremont. Alfred H. served as a first lieutenant in the 72nd O.V.I. in the Civil War, became a lawyer, and acquired considerable real estate in the Fremont area. He later died in California. Early in his life, Charles F. worked in his brother William’s establishment then moved to New York where he became a wholesale dry goods merchant. He remained in New York for twenty-five years and then returned to Fremont to conduct a real estate and insurance business.
John B. Rice studied medicine at the University of Michigan, the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and Bellevue Hospital in New York. When the Civil War broke out he volunteered his services as assistant surgeon to the Tenth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In November 1861 he was assigned to the 72nd O.V.I., the regiment raised in Fremont. He served with this regiment for three years and later as surgeon-in-chief of Lauman’s and Tuttle’s divisions of the 15th Army Corps and the District of Memphis. In December 1864 Dr. John B. Rice left military service and returned to Fremont to resume his medical practice with his brother, Dr. Robert H. Rice, and his father, Dr. Robert S. Rice. The height of John B. Rice’s civic activity came in 1880 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Tenth District of Ohio. He served only one term in Washington, finding the duties of a Congressman to be dull and routine. He returned to Fremont and his medical practice and business interests.
John B. Rice married Sarah E. Wilson on December 12, 1861 and they had two children, Elizabeth Wilson Rice (1865-1945) and James Wilson Rice (1877-1936).
Robert H. Rice also studied medicine at the University of Michigan and practiced medicine with his father and brother in Fremont. Robert H. and John B. Rice along with Gustavus Gessner and Stephen and Ralph Buckland formed the Trommer Extract of Malt Company, producing a medicine manufactured very similarly to beer. Robert H. was also one of the founders of the Christy Knife Company of Fremont.
Robert H. Rice married Cynthia Fry in 1863 and they were the parents of three children, Henry C. (1867-1942), Ada (1874-1966), and Anna Rice Pero (1870-1961), wife of John W. Pero. J. W. Pero was a local banker and active in several Fremont area businesses.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of more than three hundred catalogs, advertising fliers, brochures, and pamphlets accumulated by the Rice family over the period 1879-1947, with most of the pieces dated between 1894 and 1910.
Catalogs and advertising items were a common way for businesses to make their wares known
to prospective customers at this time. Most of this material is illustrated and offers an explanation of the various features of the item, any improvements over previous models, and construction details in an effort to persuade the consumer to buy this particular product rather than a competitor’s. Many of the pieces in this collection also include prices of the products.
These advertisements and catalogs were for products used in many middle- and upper-income households from this time period and cover a broad range of products. The collection includes items for household use (art, appliances and home furnishings, jewelry, books and magazines), as well as business and industry (agriculture, building materials, machinery, engines, office equipment), and transportation (horses and carriages, bicycles, automobiles). The material is arranged by product and then alphabetically by the name of the company. Although there are catalogs from many states, the majority is from businesses located in the Midwest. If known, the date of the catalog is included.
