Introduction
The Earl Encampment I.O.O.F. records were donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center by Thaddeus Hurd, Clyde, Ohio local historian.
Agency History
The Earl Encampment #105 of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows was formed in Clyde, Ohio in June of 1868. Other Ohio city encampment members joined eight local residents in organizing the Clyde chapter of this fraternal beneficiary society. In August, the organization adopted a constitution and by-laws. The Earl Encampment met monthly in the I.O.O.F. Hall in Clyde. The Rebecca Lodge assisted in the upkeep of the hall. Members paid a fee when the "Golden Rule", "Patriarchal", and "Royal Purple" degrees were conferred. The organization made weekly payments to those members who were ill. Death and survivor benefits aided the destitute families of members.
