Introduction
These records of the Grund Drug Company were donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in 2022.
Agency History
Grund Drug, originally known as Dillon & Son, was founded by Ezra Dillon and his son Charles in 1861. It was one of several pharmacies located in Fremont during the 19th century. In 1868, Charles married Anna Buckland, daughter of Gen. Ralph Buckland, the law partner of Rutherford B. Hayes. At the start of the Civil War, Henry Christian Grund joined the Dillons as an apprentice. He was only 16. Seeking to remove themselves from the business to pursue other interests, the Dillons sold the store to Landerman & Thomas. Despite the change in ownership, Henry Grund’s presence continued. He eventually went on to become business partners with Thomas and the pharmacy was renamed Thomas & Grund. In 1911 E. Stanley Thomas retired, giving Grund the opportunity to assume full ownership of the store. The business became known as the H.C. Grund Drug Company. After the death of Henry Grund in 1926 the pharmacy changed owners’ multiple times throughout the years. For most of its existence, the store was located at 112 N. Front Street before moving to its present location at 227 S. Front Street in 1977. It has survived two floods as well as economic ups and downs, continuing on as a fixture of downtown Fremont’s business community for more than 155 years, and with that came the distinction of being one of the oldest pharmacies in Northwest Ohio before closing its doors in 2021.
Scope and Content
The Grund Drug Company records, spanning the years from about 1880 to 1994, contain business ledgers, receipt books, pharmaceutical formulas and patient prescriptions. Three Standard Poison Registers and a single Ohio Liquor Register, which list the names of individual purchasers from around the area, are also included. Photographs, pharmaceutical books and business advertisements complete the collection.
