Biographical Sketch
George Grant was born in Lancaster, Ohio 10 May 1810. As a child, George moved to Fremont, Ohio with his mother after the death of his father. It was here that he met and married Statira Dickinson, the daughter of Alpheus and Martha Dickinson. Statira was born 12 April 1812 in Whatley, Massachusetts. The couple had two children: Sarah Jane, born 17 August 1839, and Georgiana, who died in 1843 at the age of 2.
George soon established himself as one of the earliest and youngest merchants in Fremont. He ran a prominent dry goods store with his brother-in-law, Rodolphus Dickinson and Sardis Birchard, a well-known pioneer of the area. George Grant died on 21 April 1841 at the age of 32. As a tribute to one of Fremont’s most respected citizens, all businesses closed on the day of his funeral. After his death, the business firm was dissolved and settled by Sardis Birchard.
Statira and Sarah Grant remained in Fremont after the passing of George, making their home at 1002 Birchard Avenue. Both women were known for their generosity and kindness. They took a special interest in the city of Fremont, always remaining active members in the community. Statira Grant died at her home on Birchard Avenue on 12 September 1900 at the age of 88. Sarah devoted most of her time to philanthropic work. She became president of the Fremont Relief Society and a member of several other charitable organizations. Throughout the years she continued her friendship with Sardis Birchard and the children of Rutherford B. Hayes. In his later years Sardis also lived with the Grant family. Sarah died in Fremont, Ohio on 11 September 1931 at the age of 92.
Rodolphus Dickinson, brother of Statira Grant, was born in 1797 in Hatfield, Massachusetts. After graduating from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts he moved to Columbus, Ohio where he began teaching and reading law with Gustavus Swan. Rodolphus was soon admitted to the bar and opened one of the first law offices in Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio. In 1826 he moved to Fremont, Ohio, and the following year married Marguerite Beaugrand, the daughter of John B. Beaugrand. The couple had seven children.
Rodolphus left his law practice in 1824 when he was appointed the prosecuting attorney for Seneca County, Ohio. He would come to hold this position in the counties of Williams and Sandusky, Ohio as well. From 1836-1845 Rodolphus served on the Board of Public Works of Ohio. As a member, he helped in the matters of the Wabash and Erie Canal, the Western Reserve and Maumee Road. In 1846 Dickinson was elected as a Democrat to represent Ohio in the United States Congress. While serving his second term Rodolphus died in Washington, D.C. on 20 March 1848 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Fremont, Ohio.
Scope and Content
This collection, spanning from 1833-1975, contains correspondence, legal documents and ephemera from the allied families of Grant, Dickinson and Butman. Of particular interest is the correspondence to and from the Hayes family, as well as theBeaugrand family. The correspondence is primarily of a personal nature, with reference to travel, health issues, births, deaths and marriages within the families. The correspondence of Rutherford B. Hayes, Lucy Webb Hayes, Fanny Hayes, Sardis Birchard, Webb C. Hayes and Birchard Hayes were transferred to their respective collections. An index of those correspondence transferred appears in this collection. The collection also contains a diary of Sarah Jane Grant and several books with newspaper clippings pertaining to Rutherford B. Hayes and Civil War era political issues. A journal titled “The Youth’s Companion” (1864) is included as an oversize item.
