Biographical Sketch
Herbert E. Gest was born on 9 November 1900 in Cleveland, Ohio to Herman and Mary (Betkey) Gest.  After arriving in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio Herbert married Beulah L. Freeh on 6 September 1934.  He was a sales representative for over thirty-five years for the Stanley, Van Camp and Quaker Oats Co.  The couple also briefly owned “Gest’s Grill” located at 104 North Front Street in Fremont during the mid-1930s.

Herbert was a member of the Acacia Masonic Lodge 651 in Lyndhurst, Ohio; Al Koran Shrine of Cleveland; Lake Erie Consistory Scottish Rite; and Temple Guard Unit of the Al Koran Shrine of Cleveland. Herbert E. Gest died on 5 June 1987 at the age of 86 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Fremont, Ohio.

Scope and Content
This collection spans the years from 1896 to 1985 with the bulk of the material dating from the 1930s and 1940s.  A majority of the documents pertain to the family of Herbert Gest and include; birth certificates, baptism records, and naturalization papers.  There are several newspaper advertisements for “Gest’s Grill” which was owned by Herbert Gest in the 1930s.  The collection also contains three photographic albums and approximately 75 loose photographs.  Only a small portion of the photographs are identified.  A baby bonnet and shirt belonging to Herbert Gest complete the collection.
