Introduction
This collection was donated to the Hayes Presidential Center in different parts.  One came to the center by way of the Birchard Public Library in 1995.  In 2004, Birchard Public Library also deposited items relating to the Fremont Board of Education, as well as an old issue of a county newsletter.  In 2008, meanwhile, Ms. Barb Smith donated several years’ worth of school directories.

Agency History
The first school house built for Fremont, Ohio, was constructed in 1816 at the encouragement of Reverend Joseph Badger, a teacher and missionary who often traveled through the area.  It was replaced by a larger structure the following year and catered to 17 students.  This log edifice eventually was rebuilt as a stone building in 1834, when the original structure had to be destroyed following a cholera epidemic.  A brick school house would replace that structure in 1853.  The location of this building now serves as the site of the current (2008) middle school in Fremont.  It was in 1853 as well that a number of other schools were constructed in the area.  Throughout the latter half of the 19th century into the 20th century, several more school houses were built in and around Fremont.  Eventually the Fremont school system came to be known as it is today, with seven elementary schools, one middle school, and a high school named after William Wallace Ross, who served as Superintendent of the Fremont Public Schools for 42 years.  Sandusky County, Ohio, moreover, consists of several school systems and institutions, including Gibsonburg, Green Springs, St. Joseph Central Catholic, and Vanguard Vocational School.

Scope and Content
The majority of this collection relates to the Fremont City School system.  It includes information regarding the schools, such as early history, directories, registers, elementary school papers, Ross High School commencement programs, Fremont Board of Education minutes, and Board financial reports.  It also includes several records regarding the Sandusky county schools of Gibsonburg, Green Springs, St. Joseph Central Catholic, and Vanguard Vocational School among others, and consists of directories, programs, bulletins, certificates, and newsletters.  The collection spans from 1855 to 2002.
