Introduction
This artificial collection was created by the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center staff for the purpose of preserving original materials and ephemera related to Fremont and Sandusky County, Ohio businesses.
Agency History
While campaigning through Northwest Ohio during the War of 1812, General William Henry Harrison was impressed by the potential richness of the Black Swamp area. Word spread of the untouched forests, fertile flood plains, and endless supply of game and fish. Until 1815, Fort Stephenson on the west bank of the Sandusky River remained the area’s central structure. After Sandusky Township was established in 1815, the first election was held. The following year, Croghansville, east of the Sandusky River, was platted. The Kentucky Company bought land and platted another town opposite Croghansville. A post office, dry goods store, taverns, and log homes soon dotted what was to be named Lower Sandusky. While the two towns vied for a number of years to become the county seat of Sandusky County, Lower Sandusky won out. Despite the lack of access to Ohio’s canal system, the two towns developed a vigorous trade in lumber, fish, furs, and wheat. Croghansville eventually agreed to merge with Lower Sandusky and in 1849, the name of the two merged villages was changed to Fremont in honor of explorer John C. Fremont.
Lumber, flour, grist, and woolen mills; foundries, harness, carriage, wagon, and pottery shops sprang up. Road improvements, dredging operations on the Sandusky River, and the establishment of several railroads allowed Fremont to continue to thrive. After the Civil War, the tiling of low-lying agricultural land increased production. A third railroad spurred commercial and passenger traffic throughout the county. By the turn of the century, a diverse economy, based on manufacturing and agriculture, developed. The city flourished well into the twentieth century.
