Introduction
The Fremont Junior Federation of Women scrapbooks were donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center by the local chapter in 1996.
Agency History
The Fremont Junior Federation of Women formed locally in 1939 as a chapter of the national organization. As a women's service organization, the chapter was specifically devoted to the development of its membership in intellectual endeavor, social fellowship, and community service. Public service projects focused on local, state, and national concerns. The local chapter, originally open to women over eighteen years of age, sponsored at least one major local service project each year, however, its fund raising activities also supported state and federal projects, including the international agency of CARE. Projects ranged from educational scholarships, to support of local veterans, work with juvenile offenders, and community improvement and beautification. The members met at the Fremont Federation of Women's home, located at 506 Court Street in Fremont twice each month, where programs touched on national legislation, social issues, health concerns, citizenship, and public service. During the 1940's and 1950's, the Fremont chapter sponsored the formation of an additional seven chapters in the immediate area, including Gibsonburg, Port Clinton, Oak Harbor, Tiffin, Findlay, and two in Clyde, Ohio.
Scope and Content
The collection consists primarily of scrapbooks compiled annually by the chapter. Each includes newsclippings of chapter events, activities, and projects, members' photographs as well as images of activities, and programs. Though the collection contains no official organizational minutes or membership rolls, the records do provide insight into the activities, civic projects, and area women involved in the organization from its inception until 1967.
