Introduction

The records of Church Women United, Fremont Unit #306 were donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums in 2025.

Agency History

The national organization of Church Women United (CWU) originated in 1941 under the name United Council of Church Women.  The organization was formed as “an inclusive ecumenical Christian women's movement celebrating unity in diversity and empowering women to work towards a world of peace and justice.”  CWU hosts three yearly Celebrations: Human Rights Day, May Friendship Day, and World Community Day.  CWU originally celebrated World Day of Prayer, but that celebration was replaced by Human Rights Day after 2020.  These Celebrations are hosted and led by local churches and their respective congregations.  The services are created by Christian women from across the world and are open to men and women of any faith.  CWU is also actively involved in the Fellowship of the Least Coin, an international project that raises money for humanitarian causes around the world.  The Fellowship of the Least Coin asks that every time one prays, they set aside the least coin of their country to donate.  CWU still exists at the national and several local levels today (2026).   

The earliest organizational records of Fremont (Ohio) Unit #306 begin in 1958.  Meeting minutes indicate that the group was active prior to 1958, however, no additional records documenting these earlier years are found within the collection.  In 1973, Unit #306 nearly disbanded, but was revived by a group of women who recognized the organization’s value to the local community.  The group invited all Fremont area churches to participate in CWU activities.  By 1998, 16 churches from around the area were actively involved in CWU.  Unit #306 participated in the three yearly Celebrations, hosting them at various churches throughout Fremont.  They also raised money for national organizations, such as the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity, as well as local organizations, like Fremont Clergy Fund, CASA, and the soup kitchen located at Grace Lutheran Church.

Fremont Unit #306 officially disbanded in May of 2021.

Scope and Content

This collection, spanning the years of 1958 – 2021, contains the meeting minutes, financial reports and donation records of the Fremont Unit #306.  General organizational records and detailed histories of Church Women United and Fremont Unit #306 are included as well.

A large portion of the collection is comprised of worship bulletins and planning materials for the three yearly Church Women United Celebrations, which span from 1978 to 2020.
