Introduction
This collection was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums by Bruce Bowlus in February 2018.

Biographical Sketch
Warren N. Bowlus was born in Pemberville, Ohio on September 1, 1908.  Following graduation from high school, he attended Bowling Green Normal School (now Bowling Green State University), where he met Virginia Teachout of Toledo, Ohio.  They married in June 1933.  Encouraged by his father-in-law, Warren started an insurance agency in Fremont, Ohio in the mid-1930s.  His age made him ineligible for the draft until 1943, when he was inducted into the United States Coast Guard.  He served as an aerographer, 2nd class, at Oak Island Weather Station (North Carolina) until the end of World War II.  Following his honorable discharge in November 1945, he returned to the insurance business, which Virginia had operated during his absence.  Warren maintained his office in Fremont until his retirement in 1974.  He volunteered in the community and remained active in his church throughout his life.  Warren Bowlus died on October 2, 1997 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Fremont.

Scope and Content
The collection spans the years from 1942 – 1951, however the bulk of the material is dated from the 1943 – 1947.  The collection principally focuses on the military career of Warren Bowlus. Also included are minimal records pertaining to the Bowlus insurance agency.  Approximately forty photographs complete the collection.
