Biographical Sketch
George W. Ash (1843-1910), son of Upton and Barbara (Bowers) Ash was born in Seneca County, Ohio, in 1843. Upton Ash was one of the early pioneers of the county, migrating from Bedford County, Pennsylvania, in 1833. His mother, born in Buffalo, New York, came to Liberty Twp., Seneca County, Ohio, the following year. During the Civil War, George served in the 164th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. His wife, Sarah Jane (Johnson) Ash ((1843-1929) also was born near Bettsville, Seneca County, Ohio. She was one of the nine children of Henry and Margaret Johnson. The couple married in 1861 and were the parents of three sons and one daughter: John W., Roy, Andrew, and Arvilla (Mrs. Amos Rosenberger). George died in Sandusky, Ohio in 1910. His wife’s death occurred nineteen years later. Both are buried in Seneca County
Scope and Content
The collection consists of Ash family records, memorabilia, photographs and news clippings dating from 1843 to approximately 1950. Of particular note is a photograph album of identified images of several generations of Ash and Johnson family members. The identification also specifies family relationships. A scrapbook of news clippings provides obituaries for many of the individuals appearing in the photograph album as well as other Ash and Johnson family and friends.
