Unit History
This Ohio infantry regiment was organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio in August 1862 to serve three years. The regiment was commanded by Colonel Daniel McCook, Jr. Men were recruited from Van Wert, Paulding, Geauga, Jefferson, Tuscarawaras, Lake, Hamilton, Cuyahoga, and Belmont counties of Ohio. The regiment fought at the battles of Richmond, Perryville, Stones River, Missionary Ridge, Chickamauga, Resaca, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Siege of Atlanta, Sherman’s March to the Sea, the Carolinas Campaign, and the Battle of Bentonville. The regiment was attached to the 36th Brigade, 11th Division, Army of the Ohio until November 1862. Until January 1863, the 52nd became part of the XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland. The 52nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry was mustered out of service June 3, 1865 in accordance with orders from the War Department.

Scope and Content
The collection contains 25 war time cartes de visite of which 20 are images of soldiers who served in the 52nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The images were collected by Lieutenant Ira H. Pool of Company I of the 52nd OVI. The bulk are addressed by the individual to Lt. Pool.  According to Dan McCook’s Regiment: 52nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 1862-1865, Pool was a Central Ohio Conference Methodist minister. He was mortally wounded at Kennesaw Mountain and died July 30, 1864. He is buried at Chattanooga.

According to the donor, the images, a carte de visite album, a pair of sunglasses in a metal case all belonged to Pool. The album and the sunglasses and case were carried by him in the Civil War. The items then came into the possession of a descendant and later passed to the donor. The names appearing on the cartes de visite are listed in the inventory.
