Biographical Sketch
Joseph Orr Scott was born in County Down, Ireland in 1781. He was the seventh child of William and Rebecca (Orr) Scott. He came to America with his parents in 1796. On November 15, 1813, Joseph Orr Scott married Mary Clark in Pennsylvania. They were the parents of ten children: Rebecca, William John, William W., Elizabeth, Sarah, Thomas, Mary Jean, Joseph Orr II, Mary, and Catherine H. In May of 1830, Joseph and his family moved to Ohio, settling on a farm in Fairfield Township, Tuscarawas County. Joseph Orr Scott served as Justice of the Peace of Fairfield Township, Tuscawaras County, Ohio during the 1840s. He died in Fairfield Township on August 17, 1859.
A Justice of the Peace presides over a court that hears misdemeanor cases and petty criminal infractions. Cases may also be heard that involve small debts, disagreements between tenant and landlord, etc. A Justice of the Peace does not need to have formal law training.
