Introduction
The Records of the Sandusky County, Ohio Probate Court were microfilmed by the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center at Fremont, Ohio, the Ohio Historical Society at Columbus, Ohio, and the Center for Archival collections at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. The microfilm is located in the Library Reading Room.

Agency History
The Probate Court was established in the state of Ohio by means of the first constitution in 1802. Its primary function was to settle estates of deceased individuals. The 1853 constitution gave the court jurisdiction in taking proof of wills, granting letters testamentary, and in settling accounts of executors and administrators. It also holds original jurisdiction in granting marriage licenses and issuing ministers' licenses to solemnize marriages. It oversees the appointment of guardians for minors, inquests of insane and mentally incompetent county residents, as well as proceedings for naturalization. Between 1867 and 1908, each county's probate court kept a record of the county's births and deaths.

Scope and Content
The collection, although incomplete, is comprised of 112 rolls of microfilm containing records of the births and deaths, marriages, executors and adminstrators' bonds and letters, naturalizations, wills, and estates that occurred within Sandusky County during the years from 1820 to 1967.

The Naturalization Records (1859-1906), Rolls 43-45, were abstracted in 1982 by Cleon
and Al Hetrick. They were serialized in "Black Swamp Heritage," and are available in the
library reading room as part of Sandusky County, Ohio, Naturalization Indexes,
1830-1906. The original naturalization records (16 volumes) are part of the Hayes
Presidential Center's Local Government Collection (See LG-1A)
