Introduction
The collection was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center by LaVerne Heyman in 1986.

Biographical Sketch
The collection chronicles the personal life and career of Alvah Stone Skilton from 1854 through his death on July 27,1887. Skilton was born on April 12, 1836, in Ravenna, Ohio, to Elijah Skilton and Elizabeth Wilson. When his mother died six months later, his father placed him in the care of Jonathan and Caroline Thompson. At age 18, Skilton went to work for the Bellefontaine & Indianapolis Railroad, remaining in the railroad's employ as an engineer until the beginning of the Civil War. Following the outbreak of hostilities between the North and the South, Alvah became a Captain in the Union army, serving in Co. I, 57th Ohio Regiment. Early in his military career he was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh. In addition to Shiloh, Skilton and the 57th O.V.I participated in other major Civil War military campaigns, including Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge, Kenesaw Mountain and the Atlanta campaign. During the Battle of Atlanta, Captain Skilton was once again wounded. Because of his wounds, he was captured by the Confederates and spent the remainder of the war in rebel prisons. He was honorably discharged from the army on April 13, 1865. After the war, Alvah Skilton returned to Galion, Ohio where he once again worked for the Bellefontaine & Indianapolis Railroad. On December 20, 1865, he married Amanda J. Davis, daughter of John Davis, a prominent Monroeville, Ohio banker and businessman. Quitting the railroad after moving to Monroeville, Skilton gained employment as an agent for the Merchant's Union Express Company from October, 1866 to April, 1868. In April, 1867, he was appointed the assistant assessor for Monroeville distilleries, a position which he held until August, 1868. He then prospered as a grain and seed dealer in Monroeville. During his post-Civil War years, Alvah Stone Skilton also served as a Justice of the Peace in Huron County, Ohio, and assisted veterans in obtaining their military pensions.

Scope and Content
The Skilton-Davis-Heyman collection consists primarily of the family correspondence and business papers of Alva Stone Skilton from 1854 to 1887. The collection actively documents the varied career of Alvah Stone Skilton and his familial associations. Of particular importance is the material relating to his railroad activities and his Civil War service as an officer of the 57th O.V.I.. An index to the contents of the collection follows.
