Introduction
William King Rogers was a lifelong friend of President Rutherford B. Hayes and served as his private secretary during his White House years. He practiced law in Cincinnati, Ohio, with Hayes and Richard M. Corwine and was later involved in the settlement and expansion of Hastings, Minnesota and Duluth, Minnesota. He married Mary Andrews in 1862 and they were the parents of four children..
The William King Rogers Papers were acquired by purchase and donation in 1951 and 1952. They include the business papers of Rogers’ father-in-law, Dr. John Andrews of Steubenville, Ohio, as well as photocopies of Rogers’ correspondence with Jessie Benton Fremont. Topics of interest include Rogers’ involvement in the Chiriqui Improvement Co., investments in north Mexican mines, mining in the Arizona Territory and railroads in the Southern United States.
Biographical Sketch
William King Rogers, son of Samuel Rogers and Juliet Hollister Rogers, was born in Circleville, Ohio, on October 14th, 1829. Following his mother’s death at age ten, he was taken to a school in Gambier, Ohio operated by Rev. Alfred Blake and Rev. Badger, where he remained until maturity. In compliance with his mother’s deathbed wish, he studied for the ministry at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, graduating in 1848. It was at Kenyon College where Rogers met Rutherford B. Hayes during Hayes’ annual return to his alma mater for commencement. The two became close friends. Shortly after graduating from Kenyon College, Rogers resigned from the ministry for reasons of poor health. He subsequently studied law at Harvard Law School and was later admitted to the Ohio bar. In January of 1854, Rogers became a law partner with his close friend Rutherford B. Hayes and Hayes’ then law partner Richard M. Corwine in Cincinnati, Ohio, forming Corwine, Hayes and Rogers.
In 1856, Rogers relocated to Minnesota for reasons of poor health. He was involved in the settlement and development of Hastings, Minnesota, owning approximately one-third of the land there. After Minnesota achieved statehood, he was admitted to the bar of Dakota County, Minnesota and ultimately became an alderman.
After some years in Minnesota, Rogers returned to Ohio and married Mary Andrews, daughter of Dr. John and Phebe Lord Andrews of Steubenville, Ohio, on July 1st, 1862. Their marriage ultimately produced four children, William King Rogers, Jr., born 1863; Phebe Lord Rogers, born 1866; Andrews Rogers, born 1873; and Rutherford Hayes Rogers, born 1879. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where Rogers invested in the land development of the city. Rogers was plagued by financial misfortune and suffered heavy losses in the Chicago Fire of 1871. He encountered further financial difficulties in partnership with Hayes in the development of a block in Duluth. Further exasperating his financial problems, Rogers lost much of his wealth in Hastings due to flooding.
On March 5th, 1877 after the inauguration of Rutherford B. Hayes, William King Rogers was appointed his private secretary and served for the duration of Hayes’ single presidential term. During this time, he promoted the plans of Ambrose Thompson’s Chiriqui Improvement Company to develop and build a canal across the isthmus in the region of Chiriqui, now part of Costa Rica and Panama. Rogers also maintained contact with General John Fremont, then governor of the Arizona Territory, and his wife Jessie Benton Fremont in regard to the development of mines in the region. He also had a hand in the further development of the Washington D.C. area with the proposal given in 1879 for a sea wall along the Potomac River and the creation of a tidal basin. Similar plans were taken up under Brigadier General Thomas Casey of the Army Corps of Engineers, a friend of President Hayes. During this time, Rogers also invested in the rapid expansion of the mining industry in the north of Mexico during the Profirian era.
Following the end of Hayes’ presidential term, Rogers established a law partnership in Washington, D.C. with Quinton Corwine, son of his former law partner. After less than a year in Washington, he relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where he continued the practice of law. By 1886 he had become the executor of his father-in-law’s, Dr. John Andrews, estate and managed the numerous investments in Steubenville, Ohio, in particular Andrews’ share of the Steubenville and Indiana Railroad Company. He remained in Columbus for thirteen years and ultimately died there on August 5th, 1893. His wife, Mary Andrews survived him for many years and in 1917 wrote a short family history of the Rogers family, extending back to 1800, and the Andrews family, extending back to 1793.
