Introduction
Fremont, Ohio, physicians John B. Rice (Local History Collection 30) and Robert H. Rice (Local History Collection 33) practiced medicine in Sandusky County, Ohio, from before the Civil War until their deaths in 1893 and 1906 respectively. Both men were graduates of Oberlin College and the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. John B. Rice served as surgeon of the 72nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He was rapidly promoted to brigade and then division surgeon. He later served as surgeon-in-chief of the District of Memphis. After the war, he returned to Fremont, Ohio, and rejoined his father, Dr. Robert S. Rice, and his brother in practice. The materials were collected and preserved by the Rices and their descendants.

Scope and Content
The materials in this collection include articles, pamphlets, catalogs, and advertisements related to the practice or study of medicine dating from 1872 to 1953. The bulk of the materials date from 1890 to 1906. More than four hundred of the items are advertisements produced by pharmaceutical, surgical supply, and medical equipment companies. Also included are articles (published independently or reprinted from medical journals) concerning human disease and treatment. Most were written by physicians practicing medicine or conducting research. The articles are arranged by subject. This collection also contains nearly forty medical supply or pharmaceutical catalogs dating from 1872 to 1953. The catalogs are arranged alphabetically by the name of the company responsible for publication. Lastly, the collection contains twenty-one catalogs from a dozen medical schools that were in existence between the years 1881 and 1904. The bulk of the catalogs are from medical schools located in Ohio and Michigan.
