Introduction
This collection was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center by Mrs. Mary Little Dice, 1951.

Biographical Sketch
John Little was born in Greene County, Ohio on April 25, 1837. Little graduated from Antioch College in 1862 and was admitted to the bar in 1865. He held numerous elected positions: Mayor of Xenia, Ohio, 1864-1866; Greene County, Ohio, Prosecuting Attorney, 1869-1873; Ohio State Congressman, 1869-1873; Ohio Attorney General, 1873-1877; and United States Congressman, 1885-1887. Little was appointed by President Benjamin Harrison to the Venezuelan Commission in 1889. He died in Xenia, Ohio on October 18, 1900.

Scope and Content
The materials in the John Little collection range from 1875 to 1898. The bulk of the collection is correspondence and newspaper clippings dating from September 1885 to January 1887 relating to the House of Representatives investigation of the alleged purchase of a U.S. Senate seat by Henry B. Payne (Democrat, Ohio) and Standard Oil in 1884. Representative Little was chairman of the investigating committee. There are eleven pamphlets concerning the United States Venezuelan Claims Commission of 1889 to1890. Little served as Venzuelan Claims Commission president. Photocopies of correspondence between Little and President Rutherford B. Hayes and one photograph of Little make up the rest of the collection.
