Biographical Sketch
George Crook was born September 8, 1828, in Taylorsville, Ohio, to Thomas and Elizabeth Matthews Crook. He attended the U.S. Military Academy and graduated in 1852. He was assigned to the west coast until the outbreak of the Civil War. Crook spent most of the Civil War in West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Originally appointed colonel of the 36th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he was soon placed in command of the 3rd Brigade of the Army of West Virginia and promoted to brigadier general in 1862. Crook was transferred to the command of the 2nd Cavalry Division, Army of the Cumberland in early 1863 and fought at Tullahoma and Chickamauga. General Ulysses S. Grant ordered him back to the eastern armies in 1864 where he commanded the Army of West Virginia and then the Eighth Corps of the Army of the Shenandoah. Crook was promoted to brevet major general of volunteers in July 1864 and later that year to full major general. He was captured by Confederate guerillas at his headquarters February 21, 1865. Exchanged after a month in prison, Crook led the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war.
When the army reorganized in 1866, Crook was reduced to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the regular army and sent to Idaho to protect settlers moving into western territories. In 1871, he was assigned to similar duty in Arizona. Crook soon realized ‘traditional’ means of fighting were ineffective when dealing with American Indians. His tactical innovations included the use of mules rather than the slower, less mobile wagon trains and the enlistment of hundreds of Apaches to fight along side the army soldiers. These tactics proved successful and by 1875 much of the area was at peace. Promoted to brigadier general in 1873, Crook was given command of the Military Department of the Platte with the task of removing the Lakotas and Cheyennes from Montana and Wyoming to reservations in Nebraska. His strategy centered on the destruction of villages and the supplies they held and the disruption of the tribes’ hunting. This economic warfare proved a success; the Lakotas and Cheyennes surrendered by the summer of 1877.
Crook was ordered back to Arizona in 1882. There, in addition to defending settlers, he defended Apaches from illegal squatters and miners and encouraged the development of agriculture promising the support and protection of the government. In 1883, Crook defeated the Chiricahuas who had been raiding from strongholds in the Mexican Sierra Madre mountains. With 50 soldiers and approximately 200 Apache scouts, Crook pursued the Chiricahuas and after only one skirmish persuaded them to return to their reservation. A few of the Chiricahuas, led by Geronimo, left the reservation in 1885. This brought criticism of Crook for his fair treatment of the Apaches and his use of them in fighting other Apaches. His relations with General Sheridan, his superior, deteriorated and a year later Crook returned to the Department of the Platte. In 1888 he was promoted to major general, put in command of the Military Division of the Missouri, and moved to Chicago. He died there suddenly March 21, 1890.
While General George Crook is known as America’s most successful Indian fighter, he is best remembered for his fair and honest dealings with them He realized they were often fighting to protect their rights and he supported their efforts to obtain basic civil rights, including the right to vote. When he died, many American Indians mourned.
Scope and Content
The bulk of this collection consists of two letter copy books from George Crook to others from 1871-1890. There are also miscellaneous original letters from Emmett Crawford, J. C. Kelton, R. Williams, Philip Sheridan, and an Indian Council. The council was made up of Geronimo, Ke-a-te-nay, Boulto, Loco, Chichuahua, Chato, Mangus, Nach-che, and Le-lie. Crook’s annual reports from 1871-1889 are also found here.
Other correspondence of George Crook held by the Rutherford B.Hayes Presidential Center include letters to and from Rutherford B. Hayes and his son, Webb C. Hayes. Rutherford Hayes fought in the Civil War under Crook and the two developed a lifelong friendship. Webb Hayes greatly admired Crook, accompanied him on annual hunting trips to the west from 1879 to 1889, and was instrumental in placing a monument to Crook’s memory in Arlington Cemetery. Several photographs of the monument are a part of the collection. An inventory of these letters, while found in either the Rutherford B. Hayes Papers or the Webb C. Hayes Collection, is included here for the convenience of researchers.
