Biographical Sketch
General Henry Washington Benham, the son of Jared Benham Jr. and Rebecca Hill, was believed to have been born on April 17, 1813 in Meridian, Connecticut. Other accounts purport his birth date to be in April or June between 1813 and1816 and birth place in Cheshire, Connecticut or Quebec, Canada. His maternal grandfather was Joseph Hill, a lieutenant in the British Army and his father’s ancestors were John and Winifred Benham, who arrived in Connecticut on the John and Mary, part of the Winthrop Fleet in 1630. Henry Benham attended Yale University for a year in 1832 and then enrolled in West Point where he graduated first in the class of 1837. He was then posted to the Corps of Engineers as a second lieutenant and served in the War with Mexico under General Taylor and General Wool. On February 2nd, 1847 during the battle of Buena Vista, he was wounded in the shoulder. On May 24, 1848, following the end of the war, he was brevetted for his action and promoted to captain. Following his service in the War with Mexico, Benham remained with the Corps of Engineers and worked on numerous projects. In Buffalo, New York he built the sea wall along the St. Lawrence as well as the lighthouse. Between the years 1853 and 1856, Benham traveled throughout Europe for the U.S. Survey Office. In September of 1860 he directed construction of the Potomac aqueduct and the Washington Navy Yard.

In early 1861, he worked on the fortification of a military base in Cairo, Illinois.  On May 14, 1861 Benham was assigned as Chief Engineer of the Department of the Ohio. Within two months he led a column at Carrick’s Ford, West Virginia in pursuit of Confederates from Laurel Hill, West Virginia. This action resulted in the death of Confederate Brigadier General Robert S. Garnett, the first general officer killed in the Civil War. Benham was given a line command on July 22, 1861 and promoted to major on August 6, 1861. Seven days later, on August 13, Benham was commissioned a Brigadier General of Volunteers and given command of a brigade in the Occupation Army of Western Virginia. In September he commanded the lead brigade at Carnifax Ferry, West Virginia. After falling into disfavor with his commander, William S. Rosecrans, Benham was relieved on October 11th, 1861 and sent to take part in operations on the coast of South Carolina and Georgia.

On April 10 and11, 1862 Benham took part in successful operations at Fort Pulaski, near Savannah, Georgia. He participated in the Union’s first attempt to capture Charleston, South Carolina in the attack on Fort Lamar in 1862. Benham’s commission was revoked after leading a failed frontal assault at Secessionville, South Carolina. He was then posted to engineering duty in Massachusetts until February 6th, 1862 when President Lincoln reinstated him and assigned him to command the Engineering Brigade in the Army of the Potomac. He was then promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of Engineers in the regular Army on March 3rd, 1863.He saw action with the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Appomattox.

Following the Civil War, Benham transferred from volunteer service and to the regular Army. In 1866 Benham was assigned duty at the Boston Harbor in Massachusetts and was promoted to colonel in 1867. He was in charge of the sea wall and remained there until 1873. From 1873 to 1882, Benham relocated to New York City, New York where he maintained harbor defenses.

Benham was an expert in the construction of pontoon bridges, using what he described as “simultaneous bays” to rapidly construct bridges. Following the Union defeat at Chancellorsville, Benham constructed several pontoon bridges across the Rappahannock River under fire. This action allowed General Joseph Hooker to retreat from Chancellorsville on May 5th and 6th 1863. Benham also invented the “picket-shovel,” which was endorsed by General George Meade and used at Petersburg. Benham’s picket-shovel was the forerunner to the modern entrenching tool.

On October 3, 1843 Henry Washington Benham married Elizabeth Andrews McNeil in Hillsboro, New Hampshire. Her father was a general in the British Army during the War of 1812 at the Battle of Niagara and Chippewa. Her half brother was President Franklin Pierce. Together they had 4 children, Elizabeth Maria, Lilla Marion, Henry Hill, and Henry McNeil, who died in childhood. Benham died in New York City June 1, 1884.           

Scope and Content
This collection contains two of General Henry Benham’s letterpress copybooks and 64 photographs, sketches and diagrams. Letterpress copybook Vol. 1, January 1877 to October 17, 1882, is transcribed. Typed transcriptions are available in Boxes 1 and 2. It contains primarily business correspondence regarding land purchases made by Benham in Gratiot County, Michigan. and Leavenworth, Kansas. It also contains correspondence with General Charles Devens. An alphabetical list of correspondents is provided in the index that is part of the inventory.

Letterpress copybook, Vol. 2, contains correspondence from 1853, 1861 to 1884. However, all but a small portion of the correspondence dates from 1877 to 1880. The correspondence consists of approximately 200 of Benham’s letters to active U. S. Army military personnel and the Secretary of War regarding military matters: uniform designs, coastal fortifications, hazing at West Point, pontoon bridge construction, promotions, staffing, recommendations for Civil War and Mexican War veterans and their widows, appointments, and Benham’s Civil War court martial.     

The books also include copies of a few letters written by Benham to Generals George B. McClellan, Winfield Scott Hancock, Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and Ambrose Burnside Several original letters have been laid in. Both copybooks are extremely fragile and have suffered deterioration.

Sixty-four albumen prints are part of this collection as well. They, relate largely to the Civil War, including portraits of Benham in uniform, staff officers, the Army Church of the 50th New York Engineers, and a series of images of Civil War gunboats and pontoon bridges.
