Introduction
The materials were collected by the late Captain Frank Hamilton. The collection is part of the Charles E. Frohman Collection. Some of the materials were donated in 2006 by the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
Historical Note
Great Lakes passenger service began in the 1770s with ferry service across the Niagara River. Ferry services expanded during the 1800s as a practical means of transportation. By the 1880s Americans and Canadians were traveling for pleasure. The passenger vessel service grew in response to the ever-increasing demands of the tourism industry. Competition for business led to increased advertising, including the production of brochures, pamphlets, timetables, maps, and other promotional pieces.
Scope and Content
This collection of Great Lakes travel and excursion brochures, pamphlets, and timetables spans the years from 1891 to 1972. .The materials are primarily from the 1940s and 1950s. More than 100 companies are represented. The collection contains some materials from passeneger service companies on other lakes and rivers in the eastern United States Most are illustrated with colored photographs and/or drawings intended for the mass market. They were designed to feature the natural beauty of the Great Lakes to potentional vacationers.
The collection is arranged alphabetically by the name of the company. When the company’s name could not be determined, the title of the brochure was used. If listed, the year of publication is given. The number of duplicates is noted in parentheses.
