How to Order Obituaries from Libraries Other Than Hayes
The Ohio Obituary Index is a partnership of over 65 Ohio libraries, none of which accept online orders. If you find an obituary you want that has a "How to Order" link then you must click on that link to find out that library's procedure for fulfilling obit orders. Some libraries will charge very little for the their copies or may even be free; none charge over $5. Some will take orders over the phone or email; others will only do postal orders. You must click on the How to Order link to find out that specific library's instructions for ordering and payment. The Hayes Presidential Library CANNOT fulfill these orders.
How to Order Obituaries Online from the Hayes Presidential Library
Only newspapers and items owned by the Hayes Library may be ordered through the online shopping cart .This Index is a partnership of over 65 libraries, which means that there is the possibility that the material may have to be ordered from another library.
At Hayes, the charge is $4.00 per obituary (not per person - some people have several obits.). We can not view the obits ahead of time to tell you which one is best - the majority are on microfilm and we have to look each one up manually.
Click on "Add to Cart" on the record detail page to order an obituary from a newspaper that is owned by the Hayes Presidential Library. A new window for the Shopping Cart will load, leaving the record detail page intact to order more items (if available) from that page. Clicking on "Shopping Cart" in the sidebar or on the very top of the page will show you the contents of your cart.
To go back to the details screen, simply close the Shopping Cart window by clicking on "Continue Shopping" above the shopping cart list. You will not lose your order. It will stay in the shopping cart for up to two weeks until you have completed the check out process (the cart uses cookies to store this information).
Clicking on "Check Out" will bring up forms to fill in for shipping address and credit card information. Follow the instructions to order your obituaries online. This is a secure site verified by a Digital ID. You should see a padlock web address field of your browser.
The shopping cart does NOT accept Discover Card or American Express. It will accept Mastercard and Visa only. International orders may have to have their credit card numbers called in during office hours. Ask for the Library.
Digital emailed copies - We can send you digital versions of the obits via e-mail instead of a paper copy, but we cannot troubleshoot each e-mail transaction. If you or your system are not comfortable with importing jpg, tif or pdf files, then a mailed copy would be the easiest method to receive the obits. If you would like to have your obit emailed, please make a note in the Comments box near the end of the online shopping cart form or contact us via email [email protected]. The fee is the same whether it is mailed or emailed.
How to Order Other Sources Online from the Hayes Presidential Library
Besides obituaries, a variety of other sources have been indexed into this database.
Examples of these other sources are probate case files, funeral home records, society membership records, biographical files, brief references in history books, etc. Because these sources can range from one page to fifty or more, we cannot set a standard fee for copying them. Contact the library staff (419-332-2081 or [email protected]) to find out the cost of these copies. Our research fee ranges from $5 up depending on the size of the file.
