Find 14 Squirrel Doors at Spiegel Grove this summer
Fourteen creative squirrel doors are hidden on trees throughout Spiegel Grove, an arboretum and estate of President Rutherford and First Lady Lucy Hayes, and will be ready for visitors to find through Labor Day, which is Monday, Sept. 1.
Through this free program, visitors can either download a squirrel doors map here or pick one up in the museum lobby at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.
Spiegel Grove is an accredited arboretum and estate of President Rutherford and First Lady Lucy Hayes, as well as the grounds of Hayes Presidential.
The map shows general zones where each door can be found and tells a bit about the squirrels whose “homes” are behind the doors and the trees where the doors are located.
Doors were made by Beck Suppliers, Birchard Public Library, Fremont Community Theatre, Fremont Federal Credit Union, Friendship Food Stores, Mrs. Markwith’s second-grade class at Lutz Elementary School, Mosser Construction, P & S Trailer, Sandusky County Visitors Bureau, The Summer Kitchen, Wendt Key Realty, YMCA of Sandusky County and the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.
Squirrel Doors are sponsored by Mosser Construction.
This annual program showcases Spiegel Grove and gets visitors to see the grounds and learn about the different trees at the arboretum. It has a mile of paved walking trails and more than 1,700 trees.
Hayes Presidential is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner of the federal presidential library system. It is partially funded by the state of Ohio and affiliated with the Ohio History Connection. Hayes Presidential is located at Spiegel Grove on Buckland Avenue.
