The Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio, also hold materials related to Dr. Stuckey’s education, research, and teaching career. Additional materials to this collection are anticipated and are so noted throughout this collection description
Biographical Sketch
Ronald L. Stuckey was born on 9 January 1938 in Bucyrus, Crawford County, Ohio. He was the son of Guy and Leora (Shuey} Stuckey. Dr. Stuckey attended Lykens School, graduating as class valedictorian in 1956. He attended Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio, graduating with a B.S. in Biology in 1960. He went on to earn an M.A. (1962) and Ph.D. (1965) in Botany from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. His dissertation was a taxonomic monograph of the North American wetland plants in the genus Rorippa. Following the attainment of his doctoral degree, Dr. Stuckey was appointed as an instructor in Botany at The University of Michigan, where he taught a course in Field Plant Taxonomy in May and June 1965.
For 26 years, from 1965 to 1991, Stuckey served as Professor of Botany at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. During this period, in the summer months he taught at the University’s field biological station, The Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory, Gibraltar and South Bass Islands in Lake Erie, Put-in-Bay, Ohio. From 1977 to 1985, Dr. Stuckey worked as associate director for the Laboratory’s instructional program as well. He is an internationally recognized authority on the identification and geographical distribution of aquatic and wetland plants in North America, and has written extensively on the subject.
In the course of his life, Stuckey has penned more than 200 articles that have been published in journals, newsletters, and technical reports. Following retirement in 1991, Dr. Stuckey has continued in the field of research and publication. He is also the author of several books, including Edwin Lincoln Moseley (1865-1948): Naturalist, Scientist, Educator (1998) with Relda E. Niederhofer, and Lost Stories: Yesterday and Today at Put-in-Bay (2002) for which he received the Ohioana Book Award. Other publications written, edited, designed, and published by Dr. Stuckey include Frontier Botanist William Sartling Sullivant’s Flowering-Plant Botany of Ohio (1830 – 1850), 1991, (with Marvin L. Roberts); Women Botanists of Ohio Born Before 1900. 1992; Emanuel D. Rudolph’s Studies in the History of North American Botany, 2000, (with William R. Burk); E. Lucy Braun and Ohio Prairies, 2000; Bibliography and Archival Guide to the Writings of Edwin Lincoln Moseley, 2003; Licking Ohio Geology and Botany: Papers of Jane L. Forsyth, 2003; and most recently Birds of Western Lake Erie: Documented Observations and Notes, 1850 – 1980, by Milton B. Trautman with Mary A. Trautman, 2006. Stuckey has received various awards and accolades for his research, teaching, service, and historical and biographical contributions in botany.
Dr. Stuckey is past president of The Ohio State University chapter of Sigma Xi, the National Scientific Research Society (1981), the Ohio Academy of Medical History (1981) and the Ohio Academy of Science (1995). An instructor of electric steel guitar and the accordion and a skilled amateur photographer, Dr. Stuckey merged these abilities when he began photographing bluegrass musicians and bands. His work has appeared in Bluegrass Unlimited, IBMA Newsletter, Banjo Newsletter, the1991 Bluegrass Calendar, and the publication Sand Mountain Boys. Dr. Stuckey also has researched and published works on family history and genealogy. He is a strong advocate for archival preservation, providing support for programs at the Hunt Institute, Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, Heidelberg College, and the Ohioana Library..
Scope and Content
This collection spans the years from 1916 to 2006, however, the bulk of the materials dates from 1960 to 2006. It consists primarily of materials relating to Dr. Stuckey’s education, particularly his graduate studies at The University of Michigan; and his teaching career and research at The Ohio State University and the Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory at Gibraltar and South Bass Islands in Lake Erie, Put-in-Bay, Ohio. It includes coursework; lecture notes; teaching materials; manuals; correspondence; published and unpublished research; published and unpublished articles; field and technical reports; publications; brochures; documents; photographs; manuscripts; and book materials. Also included, are family and personal materials, and photographs,
The collection is arranged into eight groupings, with the first primarily comprised of biographical information and some material documenting Dr. Stuckey’s early years. This is followed by graduate work at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. The second relates to his teaching and research career at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, including his work with The Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory. The third portion contains Dr. Stuckey’s publications in botany, and the fourth involves materials relating to the book Edwin Lincoln Moseley (1865-1948): Naturalist, Scientist, Educator (1998). Theses and dissertations that were supervised by Stuckey at The Ohio State University make up the fifth. The sixth grouping contains ecosphere technical reports co-authored with Dr. Charles E. Herdendorf. The seventh segment consists of publications, manuscripts, and notes on aquatic and wetland flora of western Lake Erie, and the final portion involves materials - manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, drafts, etc. - pertaining to Dr. Stuckey’s publication Lost Stories: Yesterday and Today at Put-in-Bay (2002).
