Introduction
The collection of Dr. Charles E. Herdendorf, a past director of the Ohio Sea Grant Program and the Theodore Franz Stone Laboratory, located on Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie, is primarily comprised of the scholarly publications derived from his research as a geologist, oceanographer, and university professor.

Biographical Sketch
Charles E. Herdendorf III, geologist, oceanographer and university professor, was born in Lorain, Ohio, on October 2, 1939. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Ohio University in 1961, beginning his career while a student by working as a conservationist with the Ohio Department of Natural Resource's Division of Shore Erosion in 1960-61. After receiving his bachelor's degree, Herdendorf became a geologist for ODNR in 1961 and was named section head in 1964. He earned a Master of Science degree in hydro geology from Ohio University in 1963 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in zoology/limnology from The Ohio State University in 1970. He also completed graduate course work at Bowling Green State University in the 1960's. In 1971, he left ODNR to join the OSU faculty as an associate professor of zoology and environmental biology.

That year, Herdendorf also became director of the newly founded Center for Lake Erie Area Research (CLEAR), a position he held until 1987. In 1973, he became the seventh director of the Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory operated by Ohio State on Gibraltar Island on Lake Erie. His involvement in the lab led to his appointment as director of the Ohio Sea Grant program at its inception in 1978 until 1987. He left the Stone Lab in 1987, the year he retired from full-time teaching at the university. He has continued his work at Ohio State as professor emeritus, as well as teaching courses through other universities, such as an underwater archeology course offered at Lake Erie through BGSU.

Herdendorf is the author of several scholarly articles regarding the biology and geology of Lake Erie and during the 1970's and 1980's served as a consultant for many projects, including environmental assessments for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant in Ottawa County. During this period, he also acted as an adviser to local, state, national and international committees relating to natural resources. In 1985, Herdendorf took a year-long sabbatical from Ohio State to conduct research relating to the ecology of estuaries and tidal inlets in New Zealand for the New Zealand Ministry of Works and Development. He became science coordinator for the Columbus-America Discovery Group in 1989 and was intimately involved in that group's search for and discovery of the gold rush ship S.S. Central America. The steamer was carrying 300 tons of gold when it sank some 200 miles off the Carolina Coast in 1857. While studying the shipwreck, Herdendorf identified as many as a dozen new species, including glass sponges, deep-sea wood borers, sea anemones and coral.

In addition to scholarly articles, Herdendorf also authored several books, including the Lake Erie & Lake St. Clair Handbook. He was a member of numerous professional organizations, and served as president of the Ohio Academy of Science in 1995-96. The professor was also the recipient of several awards, and was honored during the centennial celebration of the Stone Lab in 1995.

Scope and Content
The collection consists of notes, articles and publications by Herdendorf, correspondence, news clippings and photographs pertaining to both his personal and professional lives. The collection is divided into categories consisting of biographical material, publications, notes, correspondence, and news clippings. Each is chronologically arranged. A nearly full run of brochures, outlining the summer programs offered at Ohio State University's Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory from 1898 to 1998, is also included in the collection. The bulk of the collection focuses on Herdendorf's research in the 1970's and 1980's, with much emphasis placed on zoological and geological studies of Lake Erie. Of special note, is Dr. Herdendorf's involvement in the S.S.Central America project.

As science coordinator for the Columbus-America Discovery Group, he was responsible for all aquatic research conducted during the expedition.
