Specializing in American Studies and the U.S. Presidency, Dr. Davison is the author of Cleveland and the Civil War (1962), The Presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes (1972), The American Presidency: A Guide to Bibliographical Sources (1983), and Ohio's Heritage (1984). He served as editor of The Hayes Historical Journal from 1976 to 1982 and guest editor of Ohio History in 1968. He has taught at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio since 1952, serving as the Chair of the American Studies Department (1967-1989) and Chair of the American Studies and History Department (1983-1989), and Emeritus Professor of History and American Studies in 1989. Dr. Davison was the recipient of the Ohioana Library Book Award (1973) and the Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio Academy of History (1989). He has received several grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as the Gerald R. Ford Library (1983).
Scope and Content
The Kenneth E. Davison Collection is composed primarily of the research and notes files created by Dr. Davison in preparation for writing The Presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes (1972) and The American Presidency: A Guide to Bibliographical Sources. To a lesser extent, the collection contains preliminary research on Gerald R. Ford and the Ford Presidency. Twenty-eight boxes of original notes files make up the first series. The first twenty-three are devoted to the Hayes Presidency and are organized by subject matter. Dr. Davison recorded details gleaned from his research on Hayes's personal life and public career, his family, administration, and political contemporaries. Boxes twenty-four through twenty-eight focus on Dr. Davison's bibliographic research on the U.S. Presidency. Files are arranged chronologically and extend from Washington to Nixon. The second series is Dr. Davison's research files of which boxes 29 through 32 contain materials gathered for his research regarding Hayes and his presidency. Over one half of the files in Box 32 contain 8 X 10 black and white prints related to the Hayes Presidency and intended for use as illustrations in The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidency. While many were reproduced from the Rutherford B. Hayes Collection, other were acquired from various federal government departments. The files that make up the second series are arranged by type of record: biographical files, articles, dissertations, and images. The final files (Box 33) contain Gerald R. Ford research material as well as a small amount of data on presidential libraries. The bulk of Dr. Davison's files were created between the years 1965 and 1985.
