Introduction
The Admiral Webb C. Hayes II Collection consists primarily of the admiral’s personal, military, civic, and business papers. Also included are personal correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, and other material concerning the life and activities of his wife, Martha Baker Hayes Wilder.

Biographical Sketch
Admiral Webb C. Hayes II was born in Toledo, Ohio September 25, 1890, the third son of Birchard Austin and Mary Sherman Hayes. He was a grandson of President Rutherford B. Hayes and Lucy Webb Hayes. After attending Howe Military School, Hayes entered the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, graduating in 1911. He was commissioned lieutenant in 1912, and lieutenant commander in 1917. During WWI, Hayes served as an executive officer on the destroyer U.S.S. Trippe, operating in European waters under Admiral Simms. From 1918 until 1927, he commanded the United States ships Champlin, Wood, Moody, and Sinclair. He was a destroyer officer in the Queenstown Flotilla in 1917 and 1918. In 1927 and 1928, Admiral Hayes commanded the U.S.S. Tracey in the Mediterranean Fleet. In March of 1928, he transferred to the U. S. Naval Reserve. Shortly before WWII broke out, Admiral Hayes was called to active duty in the Bureau of Navigation and in March of 1942 was appointed director of Recruiting and Induction for the Untied States Navy. In 1944, Hayes applied for active sea duty and was given command of the U.S.S. West Point, which was the largest troop transport ship of the U.S. Navy. He transported some 175,000 troops to forward combat areas. He was relieved of active duty in 1946, and was promoted to the rank of rear admiral in 1955. In 1930, Admiral Hayes became president and director of Pemiscot Land and Cooperage Co. of Caruthersville, Missouri. He continued in this position until the company was dissolved in 1951. Through his efforts, the company established a ginning mill and increased the company’s valuation to $600,000. Hayes was also director of the executive committee of Baker Machine Tool Co. (later known as Baker Brothers, Inc.) of Toledo, Ohio from 1933 until 1952. From 1937 until the time of his death, except for the period of his WWII service, Admiral Hayes served as the president of the Board of Trustees of Fremont Memorial Hospital. He also served as president and trustee of the Rutherford B. Hayes and Lucy Webb Hayes Foundation and the Hayes Historical Society from 1950 until his death. He was a member of numerous veterans’ and civic organizations. In 1928, he was decorated by the president of Portugal with the country’s highest honor, the Military Order of Aviz. In 1919, Admiral Hayes married Martha Beatrice Baker of Toledo. She was the daughter of Arthur Baker of Toledo, founder of Baker Brothers, Inc. They were the parents of three sons: Webb Cook, Arthur Baker, and Scott Birchard. The admiral and all three sons saw service during WWII. Admiral Hayes died in Fremont, Ohio in 1957. Three years later, Martha Hayes married Harry Wilder. For the next twenty-eight years she continued her commitment to the Hayes Presidential Center, the Junior League of Toledo, the Fremont Federation of Women, and the U.S. Navy auxiliary. Martha Hayes Wilder died in Cleveland, Ohio in 1988 at the age of 92.

Scope and Content
The Webb C. Hayes II Collection consists primarily of the personal, military, and business papers of Admiral Hayes. Beginning with his entry into Howe Military School in 1904 and continuing to his death in 1957, the collection provides a comprehensive overview of the admiral’s naval career and civic activities as well as his education. Personal correspondence, comprised mainly of letters to his family, exists from the time Hayes entered Howe Military School through his years at the United States Naval Academy. Naval service records, reports, scrapbooks, photographs, news clippings, and personal correspondence offer highlights of his naval career through two world wars, particularly as captain of the U.S.S. West Point and as director of Recruiting and Induction during WWII. The collection also contains correspondence, documents, records, and news clippings concerning Admiral Hayes’ work as officer or trustee of the Hayes Historical Center (Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center), Memorial Hospital of Sandusky County, the Ohio Historical Society, and the Rutherford B. Hayes and Lucy Webb Hayes Foundation. Papers concerning the Dart Boat Company (1928-1932) represent the only business matters preserved within the collection. For further information on Hayes’ business career, see the Pemiscot Land and Cooperage Co. Collection. Much of the material contained in Boxes 7 and 13 is devoted to his wife, Martha Baker Hayes Wilder, the daughter of Arthur Baker, co-founder of Baker Brothers, Inc. She survived him by thirty-one years. The collection contains information on the Baker family as well as selected personal and business correspondence, scrapbooks, and photographs of Mrs. Martha Baker Hayes Wilder. Her diaries exist for the years 1911-1931, 1940-1944, 1951-1955. For additional material on Admiral Webb C. Hayes II and Martha Baker Hayes Wilder, see the Webb C. Hayes I Collection.
