Introduction
Walter Sherman Hayes, fourth child of Birchard Hayes and Mary Sherman Hayes, was a grandson of President Rutherford B. Hayes and Lucy Webb Hayes. For most of his life he lived in Toledo, Ohio and worked as an insurance agent.

Biographical Sketch
Walter Sherman Hayes, born July 27, 1893, was the fourth son of Birchard Austin Hayes and Mary Sherman Hayes. He graduated from Choate School in Wellington, Connecticut and then attended Cornell University. He left Cornell to enlist in the U.S. Navy April 1917. He briefly attended the U.S. Naval Academy and then served as an officer aboard the USS Utah and USS McKee during World War I, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. Walter left the Navy December 1, 1919.

After his service Walter worked in the advertising industry in Cleveland and Indianapolis. Following the death of Birchard Hayes in 1926, Walter joined the Brooks Insurance Agency in Toledo, Ohio, retiring in 1965. He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America and the American Red Cross. Walter Sherman Hayes married Rachel Carr October 19, 1935. They were the parents of two children: Walter Sherman Hayes, Jr., and Mary Elizabeth Hayes who married Gregg Wiley Parks in 1963. Walter Sherman Hayes died April 28, 1976 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery at Fremont, Ohio.

This collection contains the diaries of Walter Sherman Hayes for the years 1914-1923 as well as miscellaneous newspaper clippings and letters.
