Introduction
This collection of Willer family history and Lindsey, Ohio area history was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums by Shane Willer in September, 2021.
Biographical Sketch
Richard “Dick” Henry Willer (1925-2021) was the oldest son of Ralph Leland Willer (1900-1980) and Jeneva Mary Notestine (1903-1990). He grew up in Lindsey, Washington Township, Sandusky County, Ohio. He attended Washington Township School and later Ross High School in Fremont, Ohio.
After graduating, he received an agricultural deferment for military service and worked on Lindsey resident Harry Auxter’s farm for a short while before serving in World War II. He entered the Marines in 1943 and completed basic training in San Diego with Paul Hutchins from Gibsonburg, Ohio, who would later become his brother-in-law. Willer received training in field artillery and was assigned to the Pacific Theater, where he served in B Battery, Light Antiaircraft Group, 11th Antiaircraft Battalion on the British Solomon Islands and on Guadalcanal. He transferred into I Battery 3rd Battalion, 15th Regiment, 6th Marine Division to serve in a 105 mm Howitzer gun crew in the Battle of Okinawa, providing support in the assault on Sugar Loaf Hill and many other maneuvers on the island. After a brief interim on Guam, he participated in witnessing the Japanese forces in Tsingtao, China surrender and remained there for three months. He was discharged in February 1946 and returned home to Ohio, working first at the Erie Ordinance Depot as an artillery mechanic, then at the Fremont Rubber Company and Tony’s Bakery.
He met Cora Jessie Hutchins (1930-2002) in 1947 and they were married the following year. Willer completed a number of odd jobs before beginning a career at the Brush Beryllium Company, working first in production and later in the Research and Development Laboratory, where he remained until his retirement.
Dick and Cora had three sons, Richard Douglas Willer (b. 1948), Andrew Ray Willer (b. 1952, and William Eric Willer (b. 1958). The family lived in a succession of homes in the Lindsey, Ohio area, and were very involved in community life and family history.
Scope and Content
This collection spans the late 1890s to the late 2010s, with notable bulk from 1930 through 1950. Materials include family history group sheets, published volumes of family history and gathered research on family members; 113 family photographs from various Willer relatives, including members of the Richard C.A. and Nora Willer Family (Dick’s grandparents), the Ralph and Jeneva Willer Family (Dick’s Parents), and a collection of photographs of Cora. An original scrapbook of class portraits from the Lindsey school is also included in the collection, representing the years that Dick and his siblings were in attendance, and also documenting an early soccer league in the Lindsey-Fremont area. Dick participated in the creation of a class publication, “The Beacon,” while in eighth grade, and saved originals of each issue that are found in the collection, complete with his illustrated covers.
The collection also reflects Dick’s interest in Lindsey, Ohio area history. Two scrapbooks of Lindsey photographs, articles, and histories are included, as are several oversize folders containing maps and aerial photographs of the Lindsey area stretching back to 1924, military posters and memorabilia that Dick collected throughout his life, and newspaper issues reporting the end of World War II.
