Introduction
Charles Weiker donated this collection to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in 2012.

Biographical Sketch
Charles Weiker was born in 1949 in Fremont, Ohio to Samuel J. and Mary E. (Hunter) Weiker. His parents were from Sandusky County, Ohio and Delaware County, Ohio; respectively. Charles Weiker is the grandson of Charles F. Weiker (Sandusky County, Ohio) and Edith V. (Jones) Weiker (Cuyahoga County, Ohio) and John S. Hunter (Clermont County, Ohio) and M. Ethel (Jones) Hunter (Shelby County, Ohio).

Mr. Weiker grew up on the east side of town, where his neighborhood on Ohio Avenue, between Mulberry and Walnut Streets, was comprised of many relatives. Mr. Weiker listened to them as they recalled the people and times of years ago in Fremont. Those conversations greatly influenced his initial efforts at researching his family’s history. In 1967, during his senior year at Fremont Ross High School, a class project was assigned. One option was family genealogy. From there, Mr. Weiker proceeded ambitiously into what became a lifelong passion of discovery, documentation, and restoration of his family’s roots.

From that high school assignment, Mr. Weiker produced his first family history work, which continued to grow over the decades to thirty-three volumes. Mr. Weiker and his family made discoveries that none could have anticipated.

Scope and Content
The collection contains 36 albums of Charles Weiker’s genealogical research, records, and photographs. Also included is a box of loose photographs. The albums are organized by the surnames of the many families researched by Mr. Weiker. Though primarily focused on the genealogical history of his family’s ancestors, Mr. Weiker’s records also document in detail families with collateral connections. The collection contains extensive photocopies of censuses; genealogical charts and correspondence; selections from printed historical and scholarly works; marriage and death records; and newspaper articles. The collection also contains a number of original photographs.  His research traces some families back as far as the seventeenth century. However, the bulk of the collection pertains to records of the nineteenth century through the twenty-first century with original materials from 1850 to 2010. The inventory provides a more detailed description of the contents of each binder.
