Sandusky County Home Economists in Homemaking
Scope and Content
The records of the Sandusky County Home Economists were donated to the Hayes Presidential Center in 2004 by the organization.
The Sandusky County Home Economists in Homemaking was organized in January 1956 with 25 charter members. The organization, open to those holding at least a bachelor’s degree in home economics or a related field, provides opportunities for professional growth. In the organization’s early years, the members met monthly for programs pertinent to the field of home economics. The group also provided services and information to others in the community. During the mid-to late-1950s, the organization held an annual Career Day for junior and senior high school students and their mothers to showcase careers open to home economists. In the late 1980s, the Sandusky County Home Economists joined with the Fremont News-Messenger and the Sandusky County Extension to sponsor a holiday cooking contest.
Through the years the Sandusky County Home Economists participated in area county fairs by presenting displays and judging entries in the home economics skills area. The organization has also contributed to the Ohio Home Economics Scholarship Fund and has donated books to Birchard Public Library and to area schools’ Home Economics departments.
