Introduction
The Byram James collection was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Library and Museums in 2021.

Biographical Sketch
Byram E. James, son of Joseph C. James, was born in November 9, 1842 in Chester Township, Morrow County, Ohio. He enlisted in the Civil War in the 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Co. G as a private on November 1, 1861. He was discharged on June 14, 1862 at St. Louis, Missouri, having suffered a fractured tibia from an accidental gunshot wound. He enlisted again as a corporal in 1864 in Company K of the 174th Ohio, serving until June 21, 1865 when he was discharged at Charlotte, North Carolina. He married Maria McVey, September 1, 1867 who was born in 1845 in Morrow County, Ohio. The couple farmed in Morrow County and had their one and only child, Gussie N. James, on September 9, 1873. Between 1890 and 1900, the James family moved to Bradner, Ohio where Byram died, June 21, 1929. He was a member of the local GAR and the Methodist Church and was one of three remaining Civil War veterans in the community.

Gussie married Thomas Benjamin Daily on July 1, 1894 at Bradner, Ohio. Thomas was the son of George K. and Ellen (Adams) Daily. He was born October 14, 1868 and died in Genoa, Ohio in 1950.  Gussie taught school in Bradner. Ohio. She and Thomas were the parents of five children: Jessie (Walter Hanely); Clyde Edmund (Helen Vance); Vern Harry (Irene Keller); Grace (Nolan Thomas Barnes); and Ellen Marie (Philip Arthur Updegraff).

Scope and Content
This collection provides the history and genealogy of the family of Byram E. James and his wife Maria McVey of Bradner, Ohio, their daughter Gussie and her husband Thomas B. Daily and their descendants. It includes the diary and letters of Byram E. James during a portion of his Civil War service as well as his pension papers and other Civil War documents.  Perhaps most importantly, the collection contains an unusually large portion of identified photographs of the families, their relatives, and residences.

Photographs were removed from the large photograph album and enclosed in mylar due to the poor condition of the album. These identified photographs are grouped together and listed in folder number 7.
