Introduction
This collection was donated to the Hayes Presidential Center in October of 2006 by Ms. Ruth Brill of Tiffin, Ohio.
Biographical Sketch
Ralph Emerson Harnish was born on 7 July 1888 in Bluffton, Wells County, Indiana, to Jacob and Sarah J. (Plank) Harnish. During World War I, Harnish worked as a cook for the 99th Aero Observation Squadron of the American Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces. Following the war, he wed a woman named Candace of Adams County, Indiana, and the couple settled in Indiana. They had a daughter, Beatrice, born in August of 1928. Ultimately the family settled in Seneca County, Ohio, where Ralph worked as a farmer. He died in August of 1955 in the Crile Veterans Administration Hospital in Parma, Ohio; he was 67 years old.

This collection, spanning from 1917 to 1942, contains copies of obituary index records, an ancestry family group sheets, copies of U.S. Census reports, a military roster and registration card, academic certificates, and photographs for Ralph E. Harnish and related family members.
