Introduction
The collection was acquired by the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in 1963. Peter D. Hannaford, great nephew of Elizabeth Anderson Lossing, donated the materials found in the addendum in 1998.

Biographical Sketch
Benson J. Lossing was born to Quaker parents in Beekman, Dutchess County, New York, 12 February 1813.  Left an orphan as a young child, he received a meager education. He worked as a farmhand and then served an apprenticeship with a watchmaker in Poughkeepsie, New York.  After a disastrous partnership in the watch making business, Lossing became co-editor of the Poughkeepsie Telegraph.  Later, he established the Poughkeepsie Casket. He learned the art of wood engraving in order to illustrate his publication.

In 1838, Lossing went to New York City to seek instruction in drawing.  He was invited to edit and illustrate the Family Magazine, the first fully illustrated American periodical.  He remained in New York, where he established himself as a leading engraver. In 1840, he published Outline of History of the Fine Arts, which became a volume of Harper’s Family Library.

Lossing’s training and strong interest in writing and art allowed him to take advantage of the revolution occurring in the book publishing business during the 1840s and 1850s.  Through pictorial histories, publishers increased circulation by appealing to semi-literate immigrants and American citizens seeking to reaffirm their patriotism.  In Lossing’s words, illustrations brought “visible language” to the masses.

Encouraged by engraver Samuel Goodrich to produce “sober, honest & truthful” histories, Lossing focused on creating pictorial histories that recorded history through firsthand accounts and drawings of people, artifacts, and the actual locations where the events occurred.  In 1847, he began publishing works of history and biography, creating his own illustrations. Eventually, Lossing established a publishing company and oversaw authorship of all aspects - texts, sketches, and engravings. Among the most popular were his Pictorial Field-Book of the American Revolution and Pictorial Field-Book of the War of 1812. According to Gregory Pfitzer, in Picturing the Past: Illustrated Histories and the American Imagination, 1840 – 1900, Lossing’s specialty, field books, were “illustrated travelogues based on visits to scenes of historical importance.” In this genre, Lossing  functioned as both historical observer and artistic interpreter.

For Pictorial Field Book of the American Revolution (1850 to 1852), Lossing traveled more than 8,000 miles in the United States and Canada, collecting information and sketching scenes that he later made into wood block engravings. Published by Harper and Brothers, the field book sold tens of thousands of copies.  Twenty-five years later, Publisher’s Weekly deemed the two-volume set remained the most “salable” work on the subject of the American Revolution.

During the next thirty-five years, Lossing worked tirelessly, publishing more than forty titles, of which he was either author or editor.  From 1872 to 1874, Lossing edited the American Historical Record and Repertory of Notes and Queries.

Lossing’s first wife, Alice Barritt, died in 1855.  The following year, he married Helen Sweet, daughter of Nehemiah Sweet.  They had four children: Edwin, Miriam Helen, Thomas Sweet, and Alice. Lossing purchased a 300-acre farm atop Chestnut Ridge near the town of Dover Plains, New York.  He called his home The Ridge. There Benson built a fireproof library to house his collection of more than five thousand books and documents associated with the American Revolution and the framing of the Constitution. Lossing was actively involved in charitable, civic, literary, and historical societies, most notably serving as a charter trustee of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He died at the Ridge 3 June 1891.

A written reminiscence of the Lossing family and life in nineteenth-century New York was assembled by his son, Thomas Sweet Lossing. It was edited by his great-nephew, Peter Hannaford, and published as My Heart Goes Home in 1997 by Purple Mountain Press.

Scope and Content
The collection consists of 1,429 pieces of incoming correspondence, spanning the years from 1850 to 1891. The bulk of the correspondence relates to Lossing’s business efforts as a publisher, editor, historian, engraver, and artist. The incoming correspondence is arranged alphabetically by surname and then chronologically in Box 1 and a portion of Box 2.

Included in Box 2 is Lossing’s outgoing correspondence, which contains more than 100 complete letters arranged chronologically, some of which pertain to family matters.

Box 2 also contains the incoming and outgoing correspondence (118 pieces) of Helen Sweet Lossing, her bank book, and letter copy book. Incoming correspondence of children  Alice C., Edwin, and Miriam Lossing, dating from 1870 to 1891, is included. Essays, manuscripts, biographical files, notes, proofs, business cards, legal documents, and published articles by and about Lossing and family may also be found in Box 2.

Box 3 is made up largely of published newspaper articles grouped by subject: Revolutionary War, War of 1812, American Civil War, travel, geography, poetry, art, and obituaries and biographical sketches of prominent 18th and 19th century Americans. Printed materials, pamphlets, monthly magazines, essays, contracts, notices, auction catalogs, memos, invitations, letter fragments, and envelopes are also included.

Box 4 contains pamphlets, published articles, and single issues of periodicals.

Box 5 consists of clipping scrapbooks, an autograph book, ledgers, published works, and issues of the “American Historical Record” from 1872 to 1874 (edited by Benson J. Lossing).

Box 6 consists of bound books and pamphlets.

Box 7 contains Lossing’s pencil sketches, pen-and-ink drawings, and watercolor and oil paintings. Also included are photographs, daguerreotypes, etchings, engravings, scrapbooks, and postcards. A list of photographs removed from the collection and transferred to the Hayes Presidential Center’s Portrait File is provided.

An item-level inventory to the incoming and outgoing correspondence and to the titles of books, articles, and pamphlets is provided.

THOMAS SWEET LOSSING

Although the son of a distinguished man of letters and a highly cultured mother, Thomas Sweet Lossing lived the rough and tumble life of a farm boy.   He was taught at home, and much of his learning came through coping with the practical demands of country life.   He lived at The Ridge until leaving to study civil engineering. He then traveled to South America where he worked for the Cerro de Pasco Mining Company in Peru. During WWI, Thomas and his wife Rebecca returned to the U.S. where he superintended the construction of Langley Field in Virginia. Not long after, Rebecca died, and Thomas married Elizabeth, the widow of Malcolm Anderson. They retired to Berkeley, California where Thomas died in 1944.

Thomas Sweet Lossing’s second wife encouraged him to write his recollections of his happy boyhood with his devoted father at their farm. In 1939, Thomas prepared an account on his Hudson Valley youth, entitled My Heart Goes Home. He recalled the vanished time of the 1870s and 1880s in Dutchess County, New York on the Lossing farm. It offers a child’s-eye view of Benson Lossing, the prominent writer, historian, artist, and founding trustee of Vassar College, who worked at home in his magnificent library. My Heart Goes Home was edited by Peter D. Hannaford, whose great aunt was Elizabeth Anderson Lossing.
